Talking Middle Lane Hoggers', Days are Numbered

At Last, at long, long last, the powers that be have noticed that there are those travelling the Queen's highways who think they've bought the middle lane.
The word has gone out to the law keepers of this land to come down extremely heavily upon the backs of those who misdemean? in this manner...... WHOOOPPPEEEEEE !

We travelled up to Manc from Herts this weekend and must have done a fair bit of the journey in the inside lane( and yes, I suppose that make the other half as bad for doing that, but what else can you do ?) because of all the nutters in the other two lanes refusing to budge. I'm certain that many who practice this bad habit do it because they are simply BAD drivers, and are scared to death to change lanes as you should on Motorways when you wish to overtake. They just sit there in the "safe" middle lane paralysed, scared to deviate in case....... whatever. Daft S$ds.

So whats the damage then? A £60 fine for anyone found in the middle lane while not overtaking anything? How soon would you be expected to pull out/in etc? Doubt it could be readily enforced.

A job for patrol cars with some semblance of discretion i would assume...

About time too, imo.

They will need some amount of patrol cars then Tel. Cant see it being worth the trouble unless huge fines are involved, and after all dont we have scamera's for that. As for the discretionary use of real policing methods......

How about [f*cking radical suggestion this] including half a minute of motorway driving theory in the driving test [/f*cking radical suggestion]. All you need to do is advise on:

1) Correct lane use
2) Matching speed to weather/traffic conditions
3) Keeping a safe distance
4) Not using the M54 as it takes you to Wolverhampton which is depressing

But at least if people know they *can* be prosecuted, hopefully that will make some difference.

To be honest, i still think the most flouted law out there is the mobile phone law. I simply don't believe many people actually realise this is now illegal. Same with middle lane hogging - it will need a better publicity job to make people aware of what the new law is if it's introduced, and hopefully influence their behaviour.

How to enforce it? Simple.

Two police juggernauts, one in outside lane, one in inside lane. Both come up behind middle lane hogger. If he gives you trouble - they converge. Problem solved.

About time too. If it is made against the law they should ban offenders from motorways for a certain period.

Well its been in the highway code for long enough:

Lane discipline

You should drive in the left-hand lane if the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower moving vehicles it may be safer to remain in the centre or outer lanes until the manoeuvre is completed rather than continually changing lanes. Return to the left-hand lane once you have overtaken all the vehicles or if you are delaying traffic behind you. Slow moving or speed restricted vehicles should always remain in the left-hand lane of the carriageway unless overtaking. You MUST NOT drive on the hard shoulder except in an emergency or if directed to do so by signs.

You MUST NOT
use any lights in a way which would dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users
use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves to avoid dazzling other road users.
Law RVLR reg 27

Another one from the highway code and MUST / MUST NOT means it is a legal requirement. But it is easier to just let the cameras catch the people with fog lights on isn't it

Motorway driving is part of the driving test here and it makes no difference. In fact, Canadians are particularly bad motorway drivers.

They ought put messages saying 'keep left when not overtaking' on the overhead signs that are cropping up everywhere

Good idea, they should remind people using motorway info boards when they're not in use, like they do with drink driving and stuff.

Actually, they're bloody good vantage points for machine guns, which might just provide sufficient deterrence.

Why not just close the middle lane on all motorways...... make a refreshing change from the inside or outside lane roadworks.

its mainly women. *
you can see it in their eyes as you pass, petrified, clutching the wheel like a sacrificial chocolate bar in a time of need.
Daddy (or hubby) has told em not to worry and get in the middle lane, the evidence is apparent when you can watch them slow down when there is traffic ahead rather than deviate to another lane.
traffic thats 3miles ahead and will take 15 minutes to reach
I like to make the point by overtaking and pulling accroess to the inside lane after passing, try to share my knowledge of the highway code and what do I get?
abuse!!
ooooh, it makes me angry (and you dont want to see me when Im angry).

* I confidently say that its women because most men are hogging the outside lane!!

Middle lane hogs aren't really a problem, just undertake them or failing that indulge in a little 'piggy in the middle' and constantly overtake, let them go past, then retake them. They soon get the message.

Perception:

Left lane = Lorry, moped, slow lane.
Middle lane = driving lane
Right lane = Fast car or wanna go quick lane.

Reality:

Left lane = The fastest lane there is due to the above perception.
Middle lane = GREAT....for overtaking.
Right lane = FFAAASTTT..then really slow, then ok, then a mass of break lights...then ok.,...then breaklights. Then standstill......

.....At standstill you get Jeffrey and his wife Norma sitting in the outside lane in their 1.8lx Mondeo saying ; and I quote:

"Look at those idiots undertaking us Norma, it's a disgrace them lot - they'll kill somebody".

I'm trying hard to remain calm as I use Junction 15 to junction 8 (and back) every day. Deep breaths....calm....just breathe.

I hate middle lane hoggers almost as much as those driver who slow to 60 every time they come across a police car driving deliberately slowly in the near side lane.

YOU CAN DO 70 MPH ON A MOTORWAY YOU IDIOTS, REGARDLESS OF HOW FAST THE COP CAR IS DOING!!!!!!!!!!!

I think there should be a separate test/training for all drivers before using the motorway.
