Just heard that Northants Police are going to have mobile speed camera's on "all routes leading to Silverstone" for this weekends event.....

Interesting isn't it. I mean, I know of a car park where the police will openly tell you that several cars per day are stolen. All they do about that is put a few signs on lamp posts informing motorists that their car is in danger. They are always too busy with other things to actually stake out the car park and catch someone for the car theft, and the courts are inclined to let such people off without any significant punishment anyhow.

On the other hand open up the possibility of someone exceeding the speed limit and tens of police officers are lurking behind hedges, walls and even, in one spot I know, lying in the landscaped area in the middle of a roundabout. As we saw during the week with the pensioner who warned of a speed trap any attempt to interupt this revenue stream feels the full force of the law while the real criminals are free to go about their business.

It is almost certainly a situation that will, eventually, lead to the end of policing by consent and a general break down in what little of the rule of law and order that is left.
