A34, how bad is it at the mo?
I've got to go to Birmingham on Wednesday, I'd normally go up the M3 and onto the A34, but there's road works at the mo.
How bad is it and any suggestions for an alternative route?
I'm from the IOW (so we don't get out much ) and will be coming from Southampton.

If you're driving your Scoob it could be your lucky day. There is a fantastic drivers road from Newbury to Wantage which bypasses all of the REALLY BAD roadworks. The B4494.
If you turn off the A34 and head in to Newbury (from the South) follow the dual carriage way up past Sainsburys (on your right) and about a mile on turn off on to the A4 heading HUNGERFORD then at the next roundabout take the right (watch out for speed camera) then second mini roundabout signposted WANTAGE. Superb fun road.
You could then take the A338 from Wantage towards Oxford and then join the A420 to Oxford and pick up the A34 up to the M40. Personally, I'd skip the A34 and M40 and take the A44 up through Woodstock, Enstone, Stratford, Henley in Arden and have a great drive and take less than 20 minutes extra, if that.

At the mo, during the day, the A34 is utter, utter, utter sh!te...certainly between the M3 interchange and Oxford, this being part of my daily commute from Southampton...avoid at all costs if possible! Sat in the current nonesense at Whitchurch for almost an hour southbound on Friday, and that wasn't even rush hour.
