Wheat free diet, what can I eat?
Had a few health problems recently and my gp has strongly recommended that I try a wheat free diet. I know bread and pasta are no no's but what else is a no go area.
Are there any websites with advice on meal ideas? I know sainsbury's do wheat free bread etc but I would prefer to try and do properly to start with so I can adjust my lifestyle.
Anyone wheat free on SN?

If you mean gluten free then the Coeliac Society is a good place to start. You can get a book listing all the things that are OK to eat, including which supermarket own brands are OK. Quite a lot of packaging tells you now whether the product is gluten free. You can still get special bread and pasta if you want, but it is expensive and IMHO not that tasty. Bit like alcohol free lager, what's the point of eating something that you don't really like because you feel you ought to be able to.
Having said all that, it is surpising how many corn/rice based things are out there, Krispies, Doritos etc. mean that you can still have a very varied diet.

join the coeliac society (gluten allergy). They provide a comprehensive list of whats a no no and whats ok.
there are many many things containing gluten/wheat that you cannot eat.
beer
pasta
bread
chinese/indian takeaway (flour used to thicken the sauce)
oats and barley
squash (robinsons barley water)
porridge oats (although you can eat porrage oats)
any packet mix sauce
pastry & cakes
in fact, unless you eat all fresh meat, vegtables and potatoes then almost everything thats been processed has a wheat content.
being a coeliac automatically puts you on a reduced carb (read Atkins) diet.
having a coeliac in the family means that basically everyone will be modifying their diet (or the cook makes three seperate meals etc).

asda now do an excellent range of gluten free products in the *organic* aisle.
the multigerm bread is good, as are the muffin cake mixes. mmm, muffin cake mix.
rice crackers are an excellent alternative to crackers.

May I ask what symptoms you have?
I never had a problem eating bread, pasta or say shreddies but over the last 6 months every time I eat any of the above I get really bad stomach pains within half an hour.
Its worse with cereal that contains and wheat like shreddies and I'm almost sick. Rice Krispies I'm OK with but I've had to cut out quite a few things due to the pain of indigestion it causes.

Edd I would see th doc straight away you have classic symptons, as you have stated not all people have to cut all wheat out of their diet, it is a case of finding out what you can and can't eat.
It is more and more common to find people that require wheat free diets, I am very new to the problem but am confident that I can adjust my diet.
Fortunately I currently live on my own so that will make things a lot easier.
