Chris - well someone told me it was possible, but that was a while ago. seeing as you can take two calls on the same number at the same time, it would seem possible to have two different numbers to the same phone.

You can't have both numbers switched on at the same time.
There are various multi-sim gadgets about to allow you to switch between sim cards. Some are a replacement battery back casing and some are part of the battery. Most will make the phone slightly larger than original. You switch between the different sim cards by either pushing a switch or by entering the relevant pin for that particular sim (obviously each sim must then have a different pin). These are aftermarket products and none are made or approved by the phone manufacturers.
There was a dodgy system a couple of years back which allowed you to program the details of your sim cards into one 'multi-sim'. It won't work on later high security sim cards and is illegal anyway.

gsm - accroding to what it says on chris's link, you can have two numbers by to the same phone, and both on at the same time. i just tried to activate this, but cos of the half *rsed way that orange "manage" our account, i have to go through a third party agent to "authorise" the service (despite the fact that i am the one who is paying for it), and the said agent is not available at this time. i nearly cancelled the whole orange account last year, for exactly this reason.

Scary. Was just speed-reading the thread titles in NSR, went past the one about taking a poop in a field, and just got to this one - "what do you need to have no.2s going to a phone?"

Orange line 2 is very handy, used to have it when I was on Orange for the same reason as you - so I could avoid work calling every 5mins.
You can just set one of the numbers to divert to answer machine when you don't want to be bothered.

I can confirm that on orange both line 1 and line 2 are active at the same time- ive had a line 2 for about 6 years now.
I have everyday 50 on my line 2 and its reduced cost- as you cannot send texts from the line 2- only from the line 1.
It is very handy- my line 2 is known to very close people- so they can still get hold of me if i dont answer the other one/the rare occasions its turned off.

I've got Line 2 on my Orange phone - and it does "just what it says on the tin"!.
You get two numbers, and two answerphones. You enable the required outgoing line (typically by pressing and holding hash for a few seconds), but both incoming numbers are active all the time. You can forward one (or both) lines to answerphone if you want to restrict incoming calls.
On my 6310i, the same phonebook applies to both lines.
Great for keeping work and personal calls (and bills) seperate.
The only restriction is that line 2 must be on a cheaper call plan than line one.

I have two lines on Orange with a Sony p900
Interface is very smart and recognises the second line and so all features such as ring tone, divert etc are duplicated.
Even puts a little 1 or 2 on the vmail symbol when I get a vmail.
Very impressive and very useful. All features are possible by either line.
