Default Personal stereo?

We're thinking of getting a personal stereo for our 9 yr old girl. I like the idea of an MP3 player as it would be nice & light & we could easily mix some tracks for her on the pc. Is it also possible to attach some external speakers to these things so she can have her little dancing sessions?

Yes, you can get portable speakers that plug into the headphone socket. The same as you use with portable CD players or walkmans.

Just be sure that they have their own built in amplifier...so they will take their own batteries or run off mains. As an small MP3 player will not have the power to run speakers without an amplifier.

Thanks for the info - any recommendations of MP3 players or/and speakers?

I would recommend a trip to Maplins regarding the speakers. Got me a 4.1 system(that's 4 speakers and a Sub) for 33 quid, they have several models with built-in amps from 20 quid.
