Lightbulb What is the best way of getting rid of the smell of smoke from the car?

I bought my MY01 second hand from subaru, I really like it. But I have a small problem.

The former owner was a smoker. I havent really found it objectionable until I opened the boot this morning. It was as if someone had smoked 60 in there overnight. (There isnt a smiley for throwing up!!)

After a long journey it does get onto my clothes.

My family & friends have started asking me, when I visit them 'Where have you been?'.

Everyone thinks I am in a pub or a bar before I come round to see them!

You could try one of those odour thingys from the supermarket, Febreeze and the such like. Probably the best overall would be to remove the boot carpet/trim and wet wash it with a VAX or something similar, maybe trying a good valeter might help.

If you've had people round to your house who smoke then a bowl of vinegar left overnight in the room works wonders to clear the smell. Not sure how effective this would be in a car where someone had been smoking all the time.

Nothing to lose, I guess.

Cheers

Thumbs up I will give that a whirl

Cheers Kav I will try the vinegar.

Subaru had the car valleted the day before I picked it up, the smell (which I noticed when I took it for a test drive) has slowly crept back.

Vinegar is certainly a new one on me!

As said above I guess Febreeze is a good bet, remembering to do the roof lining too , it should wear off in time , perhaps try leaving it with the windows down (if in a safe place )for a while , Or just leave a few kebabs laying around for a few weeks !

Take a dump on the rear seat, it always, always gets rid of the smell of smoke.

Try it, you won't be disappointed.

I had a similar problem with some smoke smell (not a lot but it was getting to me)

I used some cherry cockpit shine from halfords, now instead of smoke I have a nice cherry smell.

Try those ambi pur thingys, that slot onto the air vent inside the car. They do one for smokers - for getting rid of smoke odur. i have a normal abmi pur thingy and i have most of the time on min to half way between min and max and the smell is really nice and it seems to last forever.

Only got yourself to blame for buying a car that smells like this.
Mind you, did you get it cheep, I hope so.
Try a full valet, normally it's the roof liner that stinks.

Dirty habbit, scooby is for driving.
Good luck......

almost forgot, I've found that a nightout and a cheep girl with cheeper perfume in the back of the car kills all smells.

enjoy , good luck

I used AutoGlym interior cleaner, on the trim around the roof, spray on and watch tar drip off.
repeat on all interior plastics.
Then spray all over seats etc and use a steam cleaner to clean up.

Thats how ive done 2 cars and it works.

I bet in the end you find a pair of very old, soiled panties from one of your many cheap girls, (scooby groupies) in your glove box.

Just in-case, best check.

Febreeze got rid of the pong of cat pee in our hall...our poor old moggy isn't much longer for this world so we tollerate such slips...... I wouldn't have believed it but it certainly worked and kept the pong away too.

Lightly scatter some frozen prawns under your seats - leave to defrost for.. mmm say 5 weeks. You wont smell the smoke again.
