Chav and Charver the same thing?
Stumbled across this definition in the latest version of Roger's Profanisaurus:
Charver - UK Be-track-suited twocker; borstal boy; male equivalent of a slappette (qv)....... which sounds exactly like a Chav.
Is this a regional variation?
Cheers

Yep, the term comes from the french word "charivari" which means "a mock serenade of discordant noises, made with kettles, tin horns, etc., designed to annoy and insult" ..... aimed at a person being driven out of the village / community.
The word then attached itself to the low-life person that the "charivari" was aimed at.
