It's a saying lifted from a story in the bible about a son who leaves his family and doesn't return for years.
So people use it now in everyday life to infer someone has been gone for ages - usually in a mocking tone to suggest they've been gone longer than would be expected for whatever they'd gone to do.

Tricky one.. The bible story is as described above but nowadays has two or three meanings,
Rather like "wicked" which means terrible but can also mean "mint". It depends on the situation and the the inflection in the voice... for example!!
1) Father (like me) comes down the stairs to find son drunk and vomit on the carpet....and says (taking the ****) "the prodigal son returns"
2) Someone who has been abroad for years (and possibly in Jail) and attends a family reunion and someone says "the prodigal son returns"
3) The computer crashes and after a week the guy from IT comes and I say "the prodigal son returns"
Any help ??
