I blame the internet for americanisms like "tire".

Any HTML writers out there will know you have to write <font color="gray"> if you want your text colour to be grey!

So where in HTML is the <tire> tag used then?

The internet is not responsible for people spelling things differently/wrongly - poor education and people's laziness/'Couldn't give a damn' attitude is.

Why does everyone these days have to make excuses for things.

Oh and by the way just for information use of the HTML <FONT> tag is not recommended.

Oh honestly tiggers.... I'm surprised one so humorous as yourself didn't detect the trace of flippancy I left in my post. I don't really blame the internet, I blame you!

ajm,

Of course I detected the note of flippancy (and I'd be surprised if one as educated as yourself really thought I didn't), but as I never got to properly contribute in your latest cat killing thread before you got it locked I thought I'd start in here!

tiggers.

Not edited as I remembered to add the before I saved the post

too bad you omitted the from your previous post then....

p.s. due to unprecedented demand I can no longer entertain feline related discourse in un-related threads such as this one. If you want to take a pop you will have to assume your place in the queue and either start your own thread, or wait for the next one to arise. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Do you really want me to explain it a second time as after all you are supposed to be one of the more intelligent/educated members of SN or so you always imply anyway.

As for the cat thing I will obviously have to patiently wait my turn then won't I?

See you in your next cat killing thread!!

milo, I was generalising but perhaps tyres were a bad example.

Then again why can't the Americans spell properly?

Oh how the americans laugh that we still use Christmas instead of Xmas.

Maybe all the bad spellers jumped on a boat and went to discover the Americas, or India (LOL).

These exercises practise using words which have similar meanings and which are often confused. Decide which of the words should go in the gaps. Remember to put them in the correct form.

expect, hope, wait

1. I can't come out now. I have to stay in and ________________ for the electrician to come and fix the lighting.

2. I _______________ you can come to my wedding. I'd love to see you there.

3. Angela's plane landed fifteen minutes ago, so I'm ________________ her to walk through soon.

variable, variance, variation, variety

4. The ________________ in temperatures between night and day can be as much as 30 degrees in the desert.

5. They're always at ________________ with each other. They never seem to agree.

6. We have a huge ________________ of films to rent - thrillers, comedy, romance. You name it, we've got it.

7. The weather in England is extremely ________________. It can be sunny one moment and wet the next.

experience (2), experiment

8. I'm sorry, Miss James. Your qualifications are excellent, but we need someone with more ________________ of this type of work.

9. When I lived in America I had some wonderful ________________ which I will always remember.

10. The results from the first ________________ were disappointing. We'll have to do some more.

I often wonder why the word "proven" is used so often now. I remember being told at school that this word is an old Scottish legal term and was not officially part of the English language.

The correct word is "proved".

Loose instead of lose

Bare and bear is another....
this one can conjure up some pretty horrific visions if taken literally, so when someone says bare with me - my reply will always be 'no thanks'
