No, it's incredibly bad for your back. Jack Nicklaus nearly had to give up because of back problems (but I think he was playing a bit more than I do... )

definite NO ....... as most people will tell you that golf is a completely unnatural thing for the body to do.

I wouldn't recommend it if you're back is slightly dodgy

Go and do some pilates and get an osteopath to look at you. Then when you've built up your core strength and solved your current problems.......take up golf and give your self a whole new set of ailments!

Funnily enough when I ws playing regular golf, I never had any back problems. My problems seem to relate more to posture when using PCs etc. I agree it is an unnatural thing for the back to do, but as long as you do a proper warm up and warm down before and after playing, I don't think you will have a problem. I would certainly take some professional advice to make sure that your stance and swing are correct, so as to avoid putting unesscessary strain on your spine and back muscles.

If he's out of work I'm surprised he can pay the green fees. Does he play on "municipal" courses?

I know people that have been playing golf for 20 years or so and have no problems. When I first started playing I was getting terrible back pains, but this was mainly due to me thinking I was a pro!!!!! Once I had a group of lessons and was taught how to swing the club correctly I was fine.
