Question Tell me about Sheffield...

Hi,

I might have an opportunity to relocate to Sheffield from West London.

I will be earning the same money up there that I'm earning down here so should I do it?

Opinions?

Thamks,

Mark.

Yeah, I moved to London in '93 and my particular area was very different to how it is today. Things have REALLY gone downhill and the house prices are simply ridiculous.

Do you know of any nice areas on the outskirts which have good schools and great transport links to the city centre?

I live in sheffield. Been here for 10 years.live on the west side its the best bit.

Areas to live in but megabucks e.g300 grand plus:- Ecclesall/Whirlow/fulwood/Ranmoor

Areas that houses 100plus:-Crookes/Walkley/Hillsborough/Stannington

Areas to Avoid full of Chavs:- southey Green/pitsmoor/Parsons Cross/the Manor

Great night life, full of totty. But being a southern puffter you will need time to adjust to the northern way.

I lived there for 3 years (ok, so I was a student at Sheff Uni) and I loved every minute of it

Friendly city, friendly people, great bars/pubs/resturants, excellent public transport system, soooooo much cheaper than London and the Peaks on your doorstep

Lived in Sheffield all my life.....

Like all cities there are good and bad sides. Popeye missed another and i would argue one of the best areas in Sheffield... Dore village.

The main advantage for you would be the financial side of things i think, for the same money you pay for an apartment in London you could get a very nice 4/5 bedroom house in one of the better areas in Sheffield.

If theres anything specific you want to know.. mail or pm me

Lived there most of my life between 1 and late twenties.
Lived in Totley and Fulwood and stamping ground was Crookes, Walkley and more recently Hillsborough.

Areas to live in but megabucks e.g300 grand plus:- Ecclesall/Whirlow/fulwood/Ranmoor

Areas that houses 100plus:-Crookes/Walkley/Hillsborough/Stannington
Totley and Dore are decent areas too

Don't let the 300 grand plus stuff put you off. Sure you might get a very nice gaff for this money but there are plenty of nice houses there for considerably less. My folks live in Fulwood presently and before that we lived in Totley. Stunning countryside (ah the beautiful Mayfield valley) at the top of our road in Fulwood and the house sure ain't worth 300K

For the cheaper areas - Crookes and Crosspool are becoming relatively nice places now (Crookes more lively) - though the prices are going up as they do.

I wouldnt bother with Hillsbrough and maybe Walkley myself, though I guess it depends what you want. If you fancy a lively centre for nightlife where you can have a fight quite easily then Hillsbrough might be up your street

There are certainly some areas to avoid and they were named earlier. Get yourself South West side if possible.

I would relocate there without a shadow of a doubt. Nice city, beautiful surrounding countryside. Haven't got a clue why people are attracted to London. It just brings me down anytime I visit anyone there.

I've been to loads of places all over the world with stunning scenery but coming back to Yorkshire is always a pleasure and I have never found anywhere more beautiful than the surrounding area such as the Peak District.

I'm hoping to re-relocate there myself again in the next year or two

City Centre is a bit dire Meadowhall is better for Shopping

Aim for the West side of Sheffield, a third of the 'CITY' is actually in the Peak District National Park so plenty of lovelly places to visit or even commute from

Traffic can be pretty dire as they never really built the roads to cope with the increase in traffic after David Blunket's 'Socialist Republic of South Yourkshire' transport policy (of almost free public transport) went to the wall thanks to the Tories

I lived in Chesterfield for almost 30yrs and was more recently at Hallam Uni for 4 years

'I wouldnt bother with Hillsbrough and maybe Walkley myself, though I guess it depends what you want.'

I live in Upper Walkley myself. Our houses are as expensive as Crookes but not Crosspool. Plus we have the Peak District on our doorstep and aren't as snotty as the S10 postcode . I can walk 5 mins down to Rivelin valley. Pure bliss Other places to look for are Loxley and Upper Stannington. Both are on the edge of the peak district and for 300K you'll get a castle.

Hillsborough is becoming more expensive due to the supertram(accessible to town centre) but i wouldn't recommend a night out as theres always trouble there.

I agree with what others have said. Live in South West - my in laws live in Dore and it's great. House prices in the south West have moved up alot recently but they still dont touch most London prices.
Also it isnt just the cost of houses - beer and food is cheaper, cars are cheaper (I bought my Volvo for £2000 less than I could get the same car in the South for !).
Be careful when looking at house prices though. They generally have the Scottish system where the asking price is more of a starting price and offers go up from there, often on a tender basis.

Go on - do it. I would if I could.

Fair enough. I was thinking more of lower Walkey. My mate who lives down there had a shooting outside his house a year or two back! Not saying thats normal. Its not, but less likely the further up the hill you go I'd have thought.

Rivelin valley is nice. Spent a lot of time there as a youngster, along with lots of other areas. Bikes are great when you're young. Hills can be a bugger on em though

I was a student there for 3 years 96 - 99
Generally go back once a year or so

I love the place, I cant recomend it enough to people. Great shopping, city good and meadow Hall huge ofcourse. Lots of bars, lots of talent, lots of students. Country side is SO near its brill. I used to be live in crookes, broomhill and just off the ecleshall road I could walk to the country(and I mean real countryside not some park) as quickly as I could walk to the city. Brilliant for mountain biking too

Cheap living back in those days (sausage in batter and chips for 50p in Broomhill friary ) Houses were dirt cheap, though I guess prices well up now.

Crap for curry, no real curry area as per manchester. Feels much safer than Manchester in general. In my experience the good areas are good and the bad bad, and not mixed together which is the best bit. Never saw any trouble in my time nor since.

Norton and Bradway are nice too; my family came from Dore and Ecclesall but I cant aford to live there myself..... Dont let the negative comments about Hilsborough put you off btw; as a residential area its nice but its a 'town centre' out of the city and very close to most of the scruff areas mentioned, hence the entertaining evenings.

If that's for a house then it sounds good to me, mate. That sort of money will get you a poxy 2 bed flat around here!

Any decent Chinese restaurants up there? I know Wuss likes a bit of that.

IIRC there was a survey on "quality of life" a couple of years back. Based on Westminster constituencies, where had the best disposable incomes versus cost of living. Kensington & Chelsea was top due to some massive incomes, but Sheffield Hallam was (just) in the top 10, was the top Nothern constituency, and was ahead of places like Guildford.

I'm Scottish but did 13 years in London. I've now moved North. No regrets. If you are moving to a job that you will enjoy and the salary will pay the bills, the quality of life is better. I'm on the other side of the Peak District, but there are some brilliant driving roads around here and Sheffield.

Edit - I'm now going to my local pub. They are having a party for a regular who is off on an 18 month Round the World trip. I don't expect that closing time will be 11pm....Another Northern advantage

Doug
