moving (van/truck rental)

moving (van/truck rental)
anyone moved house themselves (i.e. rented the van, loaded it etc)?
if so, where did you rent the van from, what size and what quantity of stuff did you move? would u do it again, or get professionals in next time?
im considering u-drive. are they any good? any other alternatives?
is a 7.5 ton box tail lift likely to be big enough to put all the stuff from a 3 bed house in? or would i need to make 2 trips? can this be driven with a uk license. and what about the 17 ton vehicles?

I had my own Transit when I last moved. A mate in a Merc Sprinter and another mate in an Escort van and it took 2 runs and half a day. The key to making it easy is to number every box and write down whats in there and where its going as it makes life sooo much easier.
Depending on what access there is to your house then rent a 7.5 tonne box lorry with a tail-lift and depenging on when you passed your test you can rent it on a normal car licence ....

Borrowed a mate's artic with tail lift, but then I have C+E.
7.5 tonne is the max on a car licence, assuming you have had you licence a while, don't think you get 7.5 tonne on a new licence and you certainly can't drive one in France on just a car licence.

We moved ourselves using a 7.5 tonne (with tail lift) and a transit from Target (seem to remember it cost around £150-175 for both vans for 2 days).
Everything from the house (4 bed) fitted into the 7.5 and all the garage/shed items went into the transit.
We loaded everything except the bedding/kettle etc the day before, then simply loaded these items in the morning and drove away.
If you do plan on moving yourself, get a couple of mates/relatives to give you a hand with the lifting. It's backbreaking work if there are only a couple of you!
Nick.

Have to admit i got people into move my stuff just before xmas, £700 seemed very expensive, but 5 guys turned up everything boxed and labelled taken out and 6 hours later unpacked in new pad... felt guilty standing around but they wouldn't let me help. 700 well spent and so much easier than when i moved in originally..!!

7.5 box can be driven on a car license, providing licence was pre 1998. Licenses newer than that don't carry this entitlement.
Helped someone to move the contents of 3 bed semi last year, managed to fit everything into one load.

I hired a 7.5t lorry when I went to Ikea with a few guys from work. Just found out (through this thread) that I'm not allowed to drive it as I passed in late 1999
Anyone know how I go about getting certifed to drive 7.5?
