Cures for bad hacking cough and chest full of phlegm
Probably too much info for you there in the title
But for the past week I have this very bad cough, I sound like a smoker on the brink of death.
Asthmatic too so I can't breath either....fantastic
Taken pretty much all cough medication under the sun (except cavonia which makes me worse - and puke up).
I suppose I should see the doctor, but I'll know they either ***** foot around beacuse of the asthma, or give me something as useless as what I'm using now. But if I still have it this time next week, I will go - promise
Anyone have any good suggestions?

Go to an Italian restaurant and ask for a Grappa : its a stinging-nettle based aperitif that gets rid of snot from the chest in a trice !
But you really should see your GP if off-the-shelf cough syrups aren't working, just to be on the safe side. You may just need a course of antibiotics.

I had a similar thing a few years back. I was told it was viral and hence no cough syrup, medication etc. would get rid of it. I was advised to inhale steam (bowl of boiling water, towel over head....) for a few minutes and cough up as much phlegm as possible after three times daily. You can put a bit of Olbas, menthol, or peppermint oil in the water if you like.

Grappa...sounds interesting, I presume it'll be a bit difficult to get hold seeing I live in the Balti capital. Food is either english or indian, and possibly the odd chinease - nothing else
I remember having the steam bowl treatment when I were a nipper, I think i'll have to try that.
It's probably is a viral infection, so I suppose antibotics are the only thing the GP can give me. If it does get worse or persists, I will go. But for now I'm coping ok - just as long as I don't go running or out in the bitter cold too much.

I have the same problem, and after 6 weeks of coughing and being short of breath I went to the doctor.
A course of steroids and a blue and brown inhaler has helped greatly.
Doctor told me I am NOW asthmatic - never have been before (36 years old).
Don't delay get to your GP + get some chest x rays done.

20 B&H and a cigar to finish should do it!
If u do the steam bowl thing, add some vick's vapour rub, instructions on the container, use HALF what they say. I know, it blew my head off!
Or you can always "sweat" it out overnight. Lots of blankets, quilts etc and you will literally sweat a cold out over night. You may not get much sleep but it does work.

Ahh I have blue and brown inhalers already
Pulmicort and Bricanyl (busdonoid and turbutlatine sp? )by per chance?
....they do **** all whenever I have a cold/cough anyway
holy crap...people jumping on the quit smoking band waggon
I have never smoked, well ok, I tried a few when I was a teenie bopper (and drunk) and tried the herbal variety. But on the whole no.
And have been ashmatic since, well, as long as I can remember (probably the steroids to cure that has prolonged my ashtma into adulthood - you never know).
LOL, nice to see google being so optomistic

If you are asthmatic, you would be well advised to see your GP at the earliest opportunity.
The strain on your lungs is not good for the asthma, and I'm sure early diagnosis/treatment would be preferable given your chronic condition. Obviously you'll be fine, but better safe than sorry when there is an underlying condition in the same area.

Yes that's what everyone says. But if I went to the GP everytime a had a slight breathing difficulty cough or cold he would be sick of the sight of me, and tell me to come back in week or if it get worse.
I only say this as it's the same routine everytime. So for the past 5 odd years I've only gone when I'm really bad. Like when I got chickenpox (starts in the lungs)...even then they could do **** all, and did'nt think I needed antibiotics. My peak flow isn't bad, I've had alot worse during colds. And all they'll do is test the peak flow...look it up on their table / records and tell me to bugger off (in kinder words), and double my inhaler dosage
Perhaps I need a new GP?

An old but effective way of breaking up the mucous on the lungs is to heat up a number of wine glasses and plonk on the back -over the lung area .
As the temperature in the glass drops a pressure differential takes place .This lifts results in the lung tissue getting relief as the flesh is sucked up into the glass.

I thought everyone knew that? Asthmatics with recurrent LRTIs should, anyhow.
