Whilst my very dirty, extremely thirsty, oil guzzling 1969 Land Rover V8 is FREE!
(still qualifies for excemption under the DVLA points scheme)
LOL
They can make the MOT as strict as they like..there is nothing that it would fail for that isn't expensive to fix

Now how exactly will they impose that.
Nice one Gordon, you got the shirt of my back, now you want skiddies as well.
Fantastic thought for an idiot.
Don't believe it myself.

Can't see it happening. Can you imagine the impact on the economy ? All those car manufacturers losing most of their valuable sales ?
What might happen though is the SHOCK factor is to get us used to an increase, so when it comes in at 'say' £500, we all think - 'well that's not as bad as £1,000' and pay it.
bastids.....

VED for cars registered on or after March 1 2001 ranges from £165 down to just £55 based on CO2 emission levels.
Researchers stated: “Overall, the graduated VED scheme has had minimal impact on the UK car industry.”But they said cleaner motors were chosen for company cars when it was realised they could save on tax.
They suggested CO2 could also be cut by hammering high mileage drivers. Car tax could be incorporated into petrol prices so those who do many miles pay more.
Older cars, which tend to be less clean, could also be driven off the road by making the MOT tougher. But the report warned this could lead to more cars being dumped.

Having a flat tax imposed on every car is ridiculous anyway - my Westfield spends 350 days a year sitting in the garage, yet I still have to pay the same level of tax on it as the scooby which does 15,000 miles/year. Where's the sense in that?

Come on, WISE UP - you should be used to the way this "Government" operates by now.
1) Publicise a think-tank report to scare us all to death over massive tax rises.
2) Let the imagination of the public run riot over the implications & cost
3) Implement a vastly reduced version of the report - so that you're now relieved the vast rises didn't occur, and now lose sight of the real rise from how much you were originally paying.

Sod this, I'm going to buy a diesel run it on red diesel, not pay insurance or car tax or get it MOT'd and drive normally so as not to attract attention to myself. The way I see it with the money you'd save vs the penalty for getting caught its works out worth it on a risk v reward basis. I tell you, the pikey's have got it right this time
