i tend to use expedia for the hotel & flight, normally go for 4 or 5 nights, as this is plenty time to see most things, and do a bit of shopping
loads of stuff to see, liberty, empire, central park, ground zero night life etc etc

It's do-able, but I'd go for a bit longer if possible. You will get jet lag, then again you could just ignore it and do whatever, whenever, it's a 24-hr city after all, unlike London .
The flight was 6:30hrs there and 5:40hrs coming back (downhill ) Just do all the usual stuff, Empire State, Staten Island ferry, Brooklyn Bridge, Grand Central station (oyster bar is superb), Central Park, Museums/gallerys etc. and make sure you leave room for a 4 inch thick pastrami sandwich from a good deli e.g. Katz's (famous from harry met sally orgasm scene) or Sarge's.

Can you still get off on Liberty Island? Am sure mum and dad said they could not when they went in september, something about the americans being worried about secuirty after something that happened way back in 2001.
Empire state is well worth doing, new york public Library too, that's cool, gotta get a picture of dem Lions! Grand Central, yup, a must. Yankee's stadium too is great. Central Park, gotta be done, as has FAO Schwarz.
I went in 96 and have been banging on about going back, but never have, and I'm now only a hour or so flight away, so I should really do it
Oh, and it's not exactly near, but there is a great store at 35 Broad Street, Red Bank, New Jersey Snoogans!

I think you might be able to get off the ferry onto liberty island, but i don't think you can go up the statue at the moment. The staten island ferr gets nearly as close, but doesn't cost anything.
As workshy says above, it's a 24 hour city. We spent less than 48 hours there before heading off for Washington DC and beyond, and managed to see a lot of the sights. The big advantage of the jetlag is that you are up at the crack of dawn, so you can get a really early start to the day.
John.

Oddly enough I (eventually) ended up in Toronto after Red Bank, it's not *that* much of drive, stop off in Buffalo for some wings to keep you going
I think I visited the old store, I believe it's moved since then (2000).

Yeah, it did move, umm, can't remember when. I mapquested it and it's a nice 8 hour drive from Toronto, only 500 odd miles, and that's not too bad actually, considering I've done St Louis to Toronto in one big journey, that's around a 12 hour trip (don't do it, boring as heck and the plod are really evil!)

Ha, lightweight! Kansas east to west, now that's the ticket. "So flat you can see tomorrow". Although I once drove from El Paso to Dallas (on cruise control) and didn't touch a pedal for nearly six hours And IIRC the only reason I had to was to refuel...
As for shopping in NYC, no sales tax on clothes in NJ, which is worth remembering.
