Default Moving house, need to move car without insurance, mot, road tax. Suggestions??

Hello guys
I think this one always worries everyone at one point, but what is the best action to take?

I'm moving house, and I own a 300bhp beast that needs to be taken out of the garage and put into the new one.

But I don't see a 5 mile drive as a valid reason to insure, mot, road tax the thing when I want it to be parked for at least another year. (The car is perfectly driveable and would fly through the mot.)

Suggestions?

a) Should I chance it and drive it there? (the easiest)

b) Should I contact the police and inform them as they will help? (ha!)

c) Should I hire a tow service and get it on a lorry? (not my favorite)

d) ... (any other suggestions pweeease?)

What would you do? Would love to hear your comments.

Regards,
Peter

Not fair on others to drive without insurance, its a risk on the road tax and MOT. You could book an MOT somewhere on the other side of your new house and insure it for the day or a week perhap's. Probably cheaper than putting it on a lorry.

There must be some local guy with a Landie and trailer or even a rescue truck? Sounds like a £50-£60 job. I wonder what the legal situation is if you just tow it? DL

Can you ask a friend to drive it on his insurance? Many policies let you drive another car 3rd party only with the owners permission. As mentioned above get it booked in for an MOT on the day just in case he gets stopped.

Out of interest, how come you have a fully road worthy "300Hp beast" sat in the garage not being used all year?

Steve.

you could always get a mate to follow you there, right behind your car so the cops can't really pull you over

Incorrect, and common misconception.
All cars must be insured by someone, and the friend's 3rd party cover will NOT be applicable if the car is not already insured by yourself.

Tow truck is best option. Mate got a Toyota MPV put on the back of a truck from south of England to Aberdeen for £200, so I'd imagine 5 miles could be done for £50 quite easily.

Dont you have AA cover at you new address, and the cam sensor in your pocket

Join the masses that get discounted insurance - i.e none and the odd £150 fine...

Realistically though cant see the logic in it being insured via any towing vehicle's insurance - that's a much riskier procedure than just driving it there!

I imagine it is illegal too....
A truck where the car is 100% off the road is probably the 100% legal option.

For a journey of 5 miles i would tow it. Don't wanna be paying out for someone to move it with a recovery vehicle.

Steve.
It would be interesting to see just how many people are on the roads at any one time illegally, through genuine ignorance.

As Imlach has implied, where Joe Public is concerned, every vehicle has to be insured by someone to allow others to drive it.

To be totally legal in your predicament you will have to have it carried on a truck.

*ahem*

Actually imlach, you are wrong

It is perfectly legal to let someone else drive your car if their policy allows them to, and if you are uninsured on it. I know this, because I have done it in the past! (And rang around to ask)

The real issue would be the MOT/Tax.

We'll agree to disagree.
You cannot do this otherwise everyone would just have 1 policy for many cars!

Wouldn't the fact that the car is not taxed or MOT'ed invalidate any insurance anyway?

Hello again guys and girls,

If you have an accident and the car hasn't got MOT or Road Tax, the insurance companies will refuse to pay. It's your responsibility to comply with the basic requirements for a car to be allowed on public roads.

The insurance companies will assume if a car hasn't got the MOT, then it's not safe to drive.

I've got less than a week to move the vehicle in question. Am not using it at the moment as I've been allocated with a company vehicle meaning free fuel, free insurance, free mot, free servicing, free *****! (I'm saving over £5000 a year)

It boils down to driving it and risking an idiot crashing into me (or the police actually doing more than just prossecuting speeding motorists. ha!).

...Or if anyone here owns a truck(Reading area) and wants to make some tax free money drop me a line!

Thanks for all your comments!

Regards,
Peter

Its probably still a bit dodgy but why not get someone to tow you.... we towed a non-runner escort van with no mot/tax from Bath to Bristol up the M4 using a Landrover Disco and a fixed bar and the coppers didn't bat an eye lid (the van subsequently failed the MOT and was scrapped!)

At least that way you stand a chance of being insured by the towers policy!

I noticed .... was trying to add some substance to your suggestion by offering up a real life "it works, I got away with it" case study!

Pop round and see a friendly motor trader (not main dealer) explain situation, ask if you can borrow his trade plates. (Wave a bit of cash in front of his face!) If he aggrees, put them on and off you go.

Probably won't work but it's worth a try.

Ring round a few local tow firms garages, focusing on non main franchise etc.

When my Polo got totalled and somehow the payment to green flag went amis and I was therefore not covered

I rung a local firm who towed on a flatbed on a sunday from the scene for about 2miles for the cash in hand sum of £20 !!

Either that, or a mate with an twin axle car tailer and a few pints down the pub!

BTW with trade plates the car MUST be MOT'd and INSURED
Trade plates only bypass the taxation of the car - nothing else

Just effing drive it. for 5 miles who cares just pick a good time when there is no traffic and no police; a mate to scout the route ahead and spot rozzers would probably be helpful.

Yes indeed, but I suspect they might charge a little.

(For some strange reason, now I feel like towing it. Hmmm, maybe that feeling will go away.)
