Anyone got/owned a Sony Aibo?
Sony Aibo = Robot dog that doesn't carp on the carpet.
I'm thinking of getting a Sony Aibo for the GF and daughter to play with. My GF is against real cats and dogs so we settle for goldfish.
Does anyone here have one? I've seen there are 2 versions a 210 and a 220. I guess the 220 is the new version but it looks like it want to shoot you with a lazer where as the 210 looks alot more "cuddly".
Any info appreciated.

I have one of the original ERS-111s.
These are not quite as clever as the new ones, so are only really "programmed" to chase a pink ball. Unfortunately at the time i didn't realise this, and let it play at my parents house one christmas - on an orangy-pink carpet.
Let's just say that my AIBO is slightly disturbed!!!
I do have three Furbies as well - sad or what

Hi
EddScott
I've currently got 2 Aibo's - a 210a and one of the new ERS7's.
The 210a is a great bit of kit, and you'll be truly amazed when he strteches his legs for the first time and gets up and wonders around. The football playing skills are pretty good, with the dynamic tracking working well, however he will also try to play football with anything thats pink.
My new Aibo (xmas pressie!) is the ERS7 and its a big leap forward for the AIBOS. He understands shapes (so will only try to play with his ball, not anything thats pink!) ,moves in a much more fluid way, and is a much better design (for one its quieter!) and includes things like auto charging (he finds his energy station when low on charge and climbs onto it) alongside much improved collision detection.
He also now has a bone (Aibone) which he can pick up and (in the right lighting coditions) find you sitting in a room and drop it at your feet - quite amazing!
The ERS7 is almost 100% automous, you can set a wake up time and go to bed time, at which point he will find his station and clilmb on, all other times of the day he will either wander around, play with his ball or sit and rest, recharrging when hes tired. There is an annoying bug in the software (Aibo Mind) at present meaning he keeps entering setup mode by accident, but this has been reported to Sony Aibo clinic and a patch is on the way.
So, to sum up I wouldnt bother with the older 210/220 series models, as good as they are, the new ERS7 is well worth the extra cash.
If you want some pics of mine, or even to pop over and have a look at them playing footy together let me know, more than happy.
cheers
Neil

I think the film makes him appear noisier than he is due to the sensitive mic on the camera.
Mov of him rolling over and getting up after I knocked him over here:

I think theres a lot of protection inside him to prevent damage to the componenenst when he takes a tumble (which he tends to do once or twice a week), so never been too bothered about breaking him.
Yeah, they are not big - about the same size as a puppy. I tried to get some movie of him playing footy this eve, but he just wasnt playing ball (excuse the pun)

ok, last one for your enjoyment....

I think most stores are sold out of the 7's now, as I've heard of several people having to wait 2-3 weeks.
If you are thinkng of getting one, be very cautious of Ebay, there have been several reports of ERS7 cons on there lately - very cheap, money sent and no Aibo in return

No, you dont need a pc / remote control etc - the Aibos are 100% autonoumous robots - i.e they wander around and react with their environment, their owner with out any external control (much like a real dog would). He has a camera on his nose, and a IR collision detector on his chest, plus several sensors on his back, feet, chin etc. These stop him walking into things, and both our Aibos generally find their way around without bumping into anything.
When they are new they act as babies - lots of falls, etc but they learn from their environment and develop faster walking, better ball skills etc
You can also give it voice guides such as "sit down" "over here" "bring me your bone" etc, but left to its own devices it will wander around the house, play with its ball, sleep, recharge etc etc
The ERS7 has a wireless LAN card build it, and you can set this up to check email, and also log onto it from a remote location / view the photos its taken.
Theres also some 3rd party sw called Aiboscope which allows you to use a webbrowser to view what its seeing in realtime.
They are not as quick as a real dog - and they battery lasts around 1-2hrs between cgarges, but as they self charge this is not usually a problem.
Sony have also made the code used to control aibo available to all who want it, meaning that you can write new SW if you want to get into that side of thing (which I havent bothered with).
