Is there anyway you can do this yourself or can it only be done by paying for a code over the interweb ?

 

As I understand it, this cannot be done remotely (like nokias for example). You need a data cable to plug into the phone and some software to unlock this particular model of phone. The cables are ususally £50-80, software can be got over interweb for free.
The packages offered are normally mail order (you ship the phone to them, they plug it in and unlock and then send back to you).
Best place to try is the local market for immediate service (look for a phone stall with a laptop).
