Default Setting up in business

After being made redundant, I am currently talking to some contacts i had through my old employer with a view to doing some freelance consultancy for them.
Obviously I want to be paid, so need to turn myself into a company kind of thing. I'm sure there must be a whole bunch of IT bods here that are on contractors term and can give me some pointers of what I need to do!!

Any help gratefully recieved!

To be self employed, you must have more than one client, this is important. Get yourself a good accountant, who will advise how to register with the tax and nic offices. They will also keep you right on how to keep records of your earnings and what you can claim against them for tax purposes. Its best to go ' word of mouth' for your accountant. Someone recommended is usually best. Good luck

I personally at this stage would not bother with an accountant. You certainly don't need one at this stage. Look in Yellow Pages and call a few book keepers. Interview them, tell them your plans and they'll charge you about £30 per month max to look after yor paperwork. They'll collect this, go over it with you etc etc, no more than once a month depending on your circumstance. I'd suggest you do this soon and remember you must tell the tax office your plans within 3 months or you will get a fine of about £100.
Think also about your corporate image. This is so crucial but is one of the things that so often gets little attention. Speak to some graphic designers. Tell them about the image you want to portray and they'll produde samples foc. You'll need stationary. Headed paper, compliment slips, business cards and numbered invoices to start with.
Good Luck fella.
