Keeping Reptiles
My eight year old has been going on for ages about getting an Iguana, I have always considered keeping any kind of exotic pet as an occupation best left for the experts (Single blokes in Megadeth T'shirts). There is no way I am actually going to let him have one (yet) but I am interested to hear others experiences in this area.
He is fairly experienced as on certain days of the month his mother does a fair approximation of a Komodo Dragon, in fact some days I would be tempted to get him the real thing.

I used to have some lizards - one was a really nasty little ******* that growled and hissed when you took it out of the tank - a Tokay Gecko like this:
top kudos pet for a whippersnapper, hours of endless fun scaring mates and sticking it to the patio doors
**** o' the fish tank
go on, you know it makes sense - buy him one, feeding times are quite entertaining - bit like Gladiator but with crickets

That is one mean looking little monster. Never quite understood the reason for keeping reptiles out of all the types of pet available. Just seems cruel to me as they sit in a cage all day not moving under a bloody great lamp and then you chuck them some grasshoppers every now and then. (I know there is a lot more to it but thats how it appearts when you see them in the pet shop) Seems to be worst for the iguanas as they get big yet whenever I have seen them they are always in a cage that seems far too small for them.
Apart from watching them kill insects and munch them up do they actually do anything else apart from sit under the lamp to keep warm all the time? Is it a bit like keeping fish - they are nice to look at?
Everyone has their own tastes I know, I keep rats which to many people are hideous creatures but I find them very intelligent and entertaining to keep, watch and let out to play (my alternative to having a pet dog really). I couldn't find that similar sort of attraction to keeping a lizard or snake?

I have got two bearded dragons and a royal python that I keep in 3 four foot tanks in my living room, trust me the electric bill has gone up a wee bit since I moved them into the house over the last 4 years !!!
