Employment law advice needed urgently please...
Need to know what the law for minimimum working temperature is. This applies for a retail outlet with chiller cabinets on the floor but have checkouts close by, as opposed to warm comfy offices.
I have phoned Citizens Advice Bureau and they say 16C but thats only Government recommendations as far as I understand and not EEC legislation.
Please can someone who is in the know on this stuff let me know asap.
TIA for any help

No minimum, but if you are expected to work below a certain temp inside (11C AFAIK) they should provide you with suitable clothing.
I would quote the govt recommendation to the employer and ask for thermals

Cheers mate, yeah I have told the Mrs 16C and she told her employers and they said boll0cks its only for offices. Her employers really p!ss me off big time and think I will be making a trip into see them tomorrow to air my views on them to their faces
She has now kicked up enough fuss for them to provide her with a fleece and gloves but its still a joke, they only gave them to her after telling them I was talking to a solicitor! They think they can get away with murder She wants to leave anyway so time for me to go and cause a scene and let everyone know what **** they try and get away with

Oh and the other thing I want to know is if its legal for the employer to deduct from hourly wage breaks that are taken (not lunch breaks) ie for every 4 hours worked you are legally entitled to a 15 minute break. Well guess what this company don't pay for those 15 minute breaks and deduct the time from the hours worked in the day. And they only allow for a 30 minute lunch break as well.
I am gonna go to town on the senior manager on duty at this place tomorrow when I pay them a visit ******* tight w@nkers

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but i don't think the employer is bound to pay employees during breaks, although i'd suggest that most do.
I think the legal requirement for breaks is 10 mins in 4 hours, though the working time regs only refer to an uninterupted 20 mins in a period of 6 hours or more. http://www.hmso.gov.uk/si/si1998/19981833.htm#12
30 mins for lunch is fairly common... for one, it's the accepted standard throughout the construction industry.

Thanks John. Basically it seems as though it simply boils down to this company keeping to the absolute minimum for its employees. They are a BIG high street name supposedly known for their good attitude towards staff. What a joke! I used to work for Sainsburys as a student and I thought they were diabolical but in comparison they were most generous and made to look like a holiday camp compared to this lot

Have you ever tried to eat for 30 minutes non stop
Too right they are mean FB, I can't believe some of the stuff the Mrs tells me about what goes on at this place. She was a couple of minutes late down from her luch today apparently and they have docked her another 15 minutes off her pay because of this. If it was me i'd have told em to **** 'em selves, the bloody jobsworths

Bob - if the mrs is down at the west station then they are a bunch of wakners! I resigned from there years ago as my boss offered my job to a mate, plonker did not know the chap was my mate. Management would do **** all about this. Plus the usual power-crazed wanna be traffic warden floor managers down there were prats too. There's still a couple of em down there now (10 years later) I smile and laugh at them, sad bastids!

Hahaha Markus you talking about good old Sainsburys? I worked there 10 years ago as a student. I ran the frozen dept at weekends - all that ice cream was too much of a temptation
Who do you know down there?
And no the Mrs doesn't work there, like I said Sainsburys is a holiday camp in comparison to where she works
