Angry Cyclists...Does the Highway code not apply to them?

Having just had an argument with a cylist who almost ran me over whilst I was crossing at at set of light (the lights were red for traffic and green for pedestrians)

Why is it that they just ignore lights and dont get pulled up for it by the police?

Everyday is see them carrying straight on through red lights and then getting shirty if someone almost kills them?!

Is this just a London thing or does it happen elsewhere?

its starting to really P me off

J

Blame cycle couriers. They planted the seed. Everyone else started to copy them.
Crap state of affairs.

As far as I know the highway code still applys and they have to stop at lights in just the same way as cars, motorbikes etc. They never do though

Portsmouth police had a crackdown on cyclists the other month. Even easier than catching 'criminal' motorists apparently. They are subject to the highway code, most just don't bother abiding by it. AFAIK you can also be done for speeding on a bike!! Like to see a Gatso sort that one out

Shame on them.....

I hate those that give us proper cyclists a bad name

I have actually caught up with a few red-lighters before and given them a piece of my mind. No need for it at all.........

Same thing happens in Lougborough - usually on a dark bike with a cyclist in dark clothes after dusk with no lights on. That accounts for about 90% of the cyclists in Loughborough.

Don't get me started on the no-lights brigade!! LED lights are SO cheap and last ages these days...no excuse.

Would you believe I got pulled-up for my front lights being TOO bright once on my bike....25W......not a cop, just an annoyed pedestrian on a cycle path! Apparently I was blinding him.

Cyclists seem to use the Code selectively. They take the parts they like and vehemently defend them and ignore all the other parts.

That seems to apply to moped riders in London too.

I was a split second away from wiping one out last night as he decided to undertake me where the inside gap turned into a big **** off London Routemaster bus.

I think ALL new roads built/modified should have separate cycle paths (not at edge of road, but distinct paths) put in.

That way, we are are ALL happy!

1) It would reduce conflict between cars/cycles
2) It would encourage more to cycle as not as dangerous

A common one here is to weave through all the traffic (that has just had to overtake them) all the way to the front of the queue at the lights, then, in an effort to not have to put a foot down, they wobble around alarmingly at the front of the queue trying to stay upright whilst creeping out further and further past the lights and into the centre of the junction. Then when the lights change they are right in the way of all the cars again who catch them up in seconds!

You boys have it so easy. Cyclists are a law unto themselves over here in Holland: they don't stop at reds, ride without lights at night and the police do almost nothing about it.

Worst of all though is the law : for example, if I am driving legally along the road at night and hit a drunken cyclist with no lights who has just ridden through a red - Dutch law deems the accident to have been my fault. WTF???

Part time [and mostly legal] cyclist

I hate the ones who use the pavement where there is no cycle lane. Unless I'm very mistaken, it's still illegal!

Some grown-up t0sser on his mountain bike nearly knocked my wife over the other day - I told him to get off the pavement and he shouted back "mind your own fecking business". Hello, you nearly run my wife over and it is my fecking business!

That said, I'd move out the way for a kid who's a bit too small to use the road

Just remembered I did my Cycling Proficiency Test when I was about 10. Our headmaster always told us we couldn't use the road without it!

Cyclists do tend to have the law favour them. Unbelievable, I know, but it's illegal to
a) push them off cliffs
b) attach lighted fireworks to their seats
c) chase them down the street, dressed as a giant banana, whilst pelting them with lumps of mashed potato.

Just unfair!

When you've been nearly squashed 20 times by ignorant motorists who wont give you a little space when they overtake you. Or trawl along 2 foot from your rear bumper.

I think I have a right to get the ****

Blame cycle couriers
Not at all Andrew. Cycle couriers are a reasonably recent phenonomen, only appearing in the London scene about 17 or so years ago.

Rest assured, pedal cyclists were riding like that long before they turned up.

I used to ride on pavements etc when I were a lad, just never stopped when I grew up - sure its the same for 1000s

Cyclists can obtain 3rd party insurance. However, quite often, General Household insurance plans cover 3rd party injury in the case of an accident with a cyclist. You/they may not realise it at the time but worth knowing about/thinking of.

If injured, always seek the advice of a specialist personal injury lawyer if thinking about making a claim.

Rob

Most people's Household Insurance covers them for 3rd party injury/loss as a result of the policyholder's fault.

Great I'll just quote the cyclists number plate to the police and let them deal with it...DOH!

Suresh - been to Holland, pretty much the same as Cambridge, in many ways! Or Lincolnshire - even more similarities. In Lincolnshire you are supposed to know where all the cyclists live and that at 3.00 on a Wednesday afternoon they always go to their aunty May's and so will turn right in to that road and so they don't need to bother signalling.

Totaly fed up with these bunch of new age eco warrior morons on pushbikes who fly through Red Lights. Had a couple skid to a stop when I dared to cross the road when it was my turn. Looked at me as if I was in the wrong. The look on my face made sure that they knew they were in trouble if they said a word. Steel Toecap boots are verrrryy good at hurting people.

The only good thing is London does have coppers on MTB's policing the roads. When a bike is stopped I feel like giving the copper a pat on the back and poking the eco muppet in the eyes. Hollier than thou @rse holes. Yes I did ride a bike when younger and I stuck to the rules of the road as I didn't want to get squashed.
