sounds like a bit of a con ??
Hi folks,
What do you think about this....
My Uncle owns a body shop and was approached today by a company called "Business Domain Protection" telling him that someone is trying to reg. his company name as a web address. He was then told that he could block this / get in there first for the fee of £200 for 2 years.
Sounds like a bit of a scam to me. He is not that familiar with internet activity so was wondering what the story was?
They are going to be getting back to him @ 1600hrs so any experience of these types of things before then would be greatfully recieved.
Cheers
Paul.

PG we get several a month like this, either complete con or they have registered a derivative of your site eg yours is ppp.com they have bought ppp.reg

Agreed. Complete and utter con.
It's just a way of you giving them money with little effort on their part.
Some people buy the name off the current domain holder for significantly less money. Others ignore it.

As there are so many derivatives available now and for only £9.99 for 2 years I'd say don't bother.
Obviously .com, .co.uk and . net are still recognised as the generic top level domains but they still aren't £200 for 2 years.
They offer so many suffixces now that having them all would be prohibitive.
The chances are that your dad's site would be £9.99 for 2 years if he wasn't to choose the 3 above domains.
Even if he did they'd still be about £49.99/2 years as I assume his business name won't necessarily be that sort after.
Try here and type in his business name and see.
