Improving security in the house
#1
In work today and i've had alot of people commenting to me about the number of scooby thefts in the area.......usual stuff
Car jacking
Broken into garages
and an ever more popular breakin into you home and taken the keys.....
Now this worries me a great deal. Thinkin of someone in my house whilst i'm asleep is'nt a nice thought.
So my car security is Excellent
Garage security is Excellent
House also excellent but i want to beef it up.
I'm looking for suggestions and areas to cover.
many thanks

I am looking into this today. We got home from holiday to find that some scum sucking pond life had poured a tin of paint over the wifes beemer. Fortunately a neighbour spent several hours with white spirit and an old credit card and has done a great job of sorting it out for us. There is still a big dent in the rear pillar where I assume the can hit the car.
I am looking at www.iviewcameras.co.uk at the moment.
The voltek professional outdoor cam is 214.95 inc vat and delivery add 99.95 for video capture card and software.
I already have a capture card but need the software so will see if I can source the software separately.
Let me know what you find out.
The lady at the company said that they sometimes offer discounts for order > £1000 so maybe an idea for a group buy ??
I am probably looking at over £300 just myself so it shouldn't be hard to get to £1000 +

CCTV is good, but it won't warn you someone is in the house. If you can independently set your house alarm so just your door contacts are armed while you're asleep, at least you (and probably all your neighbours) will wake up if someone tries to break in.
If you can't set the doors independently of the PIR's or don't have a burglar alarm you can buy cheap alarms from B&Q etc for about £20 each - just set one of these over each external door and arm them when you go to bed.

If you've got wireless PIR'S on your house alarm get a spare one and put it in the car, if they break into the car the house alarm will wake up the street at the same time .

We got done with a 'hook and cane' last year- the b*stards fished the house keys through the letterbox and let themselves in.
I invested a tenner in a letterbox guard, basically fits on the back of the letterbox and forces everything downwards.
Specifically designed to prevent hook and cane robberies.
The idea is that they could not get a cane through, nor can they see in to see if there's anything lying around.
Value for money I thought. Will try and find the details if anyone's interested.

1) Hide your car keys (and not under the doormat).
2) Buy a house with a garage and alarm that (cost about £11 from maplins)
3) Make sure your house is alarmed - cctv is ok'ish a bit of a deterrent.
4) Move to a nicer area

Pretty much what the above are saying ie alarm that set at night to cover all downstairs.
Make sure curtains are closed at night etc.
Make sure that exterior doors are solid and lock into solid frames etc and are locked !!
Don't leave cash / keys on show hat easily viewable from outside
Security light with internal sounder - ok if have no pets etc
