Has the law changed on this now? several yrs age when I was involved with some rally lads, they always said it was illegal to drive a car on the road (normal use) with numbers on the doors, however lately (and on some cars on this site)I have seen loads with large 'race type' numbers displayed.

Can someone enlighten me and seatle an argument.
Cheers
Rich

I'm not so sure on the legality, but according to our motorsport regs at Hillclimbing club level you can get your entry withdrawn and effectively banned (from the venue) if you are seen on the road with numbers visable.

illegal as far as i am aware

All you need is a line to cross through it when on the road- literally a strip of tape through the number

daft really

Agreed...as far as I know it's still illegal unless "crossed through". A line of black tape usually suffices.

Thumbs up

Certain it's not illegal to have numbers on display, but you'll find most of the car clubs (BRSCC & BRDC etc) stipulate that they are to be crossed through within their own regs. (Might ultimately be a RAC MSA reg.)

As Dunk says - its not illegal for a road car (or bike for that matter) to have race numbers on it.

However the MSA (motorsport governing body) regulations forbid a race car driving on the road displaying race numbers (crossing out with tape is good enough). This isnt "illegal" in that you cant be done by the police, only barred from a motorsport event.

So there's an odd situation where proper road legal race or rally cars have to cross out their numbers, but your Mini can drive around the streets with numbers on the side...
