what time do I need to be leaving in the morning to be there for 8:30...

You should do it in 3 hours so allow 3.5 to be on the safe side. Used to do it all the time although you need to watch out for the police on the A/M74 (or whatever it's called these days).

Took me 2.5hrs to get from Hamilton to Aldersley Edge a few years ago without going to much over the speed limit. Obviously depends on traffic.
I'd say 3-3.5hrs sounds about right.
