Does anyone on SN have, or use a radio scanner?

At work we use a Phillips PMR in order to communicate between staff and our control centre.

Thinking of getting a scanner in order to listen to whats going on @ work prior to me goin on shift, plus there's always something worth listening to out there if my mates experiences are anything to go by?

Whats the legal situation of owning a scanner??

Do the Fed's still take a dim view of them? (not sure if you can still pick them up anyway?)

Cheers for any info.

Roger that, mother goose, got me a convoy etc.

I've still got my "Tandys" Realistic scanner somewhere. It used to be great for listening to phone conversations years ago

I also have a Realistic scanner which I take to Rallies I marshal on to listen into the safety radio communications.

Could you not buy another PMR handset, say item 553/0063 at £24.50 from Argos, and use this for listening in if you know the channel they are using at your work? All PMR run on same bands so the brand/make doesnt matter.
I am assuming the short range of the PMR broadcasts means that even a proper scanner wont pick the broadcast up if you are outside the 3km range.

What I've got is a Phillips FM 1000 control console fitted in my Land Rover Defender, the mobile transciever is for use in the Electricity supply/distribution industry. We make and receive calls anywhere from Alnwick, down to Filey, and across to Harrogate, I assume by relaying from mast to mast?

You're info has given me a few ideas, and there is a good site @ www.nevada.co.uk

Nice one.

I've got a Yupiteru 7100 scanner somewhere... You name it, and I'm sure it can pick it up ~ if only I knew how !

Gets very very good reviews, but vastly complicated.

"Honest officer I don't listen to anything I shouldn't"
...... I can't cos its tooo bloody complicated!!!
