Not a book, but a subscription-based web site: http://www.photographytips.com/ is very readable and a pretty good introductory guide. For US$4.95/month I'd suggest you subscribe for a month and have a read.

I went to the library on thursday and picked up a book call Taking great photographs by John Freeman it's not a bad read and if your quite new to photography like me it's got some good idea's (personally wouldn't buy it though) all the other books i saw in library where very specific (lanscape, portrait etc etc), might wander round waterstones as i've got some vouchers
