just listening to the news on radio 1 , it says the government is looking to increase speeding fines by £5 to raise cash for the fight against crime.

TBH - aside from the obvious fleecing argument especially when the fines went up £20 only 3 years ago I'd rather pay £120 and not have points.

Given that most of this money is kept by the local force, if you got caught speeding enough times, could you claim a council tax rebate?

Question

So if everybody kept under the speed limits for 6 months or so, does that mean this government / country / police force would be shafted because they have no money? If that is indeed true then it is a sad fcuked up state of affairs

So the message being sent out is...

to fund the ongoing fight against crime, we need more people to commit a crime to fund the fight.

That's what I called joined up government thinking

I thought the money was going to a victims of crime fund?
Anyway yet again the motorist will foot the bill.

Why - because it is easy to extract money from the motorist rather than a druggie with no fixed abode.

Scumbags commit the crimes like robbery or rape and the motorist pays their way for them - This sucks but then again it a new labour way of doing things.

Victims should be compensated, no argument but by the perpertator(s) of the crimes.

Another example of this governments inability to fix the problem.

Also Labour are thinking about an extra tax on alcohol to go into a fund for the crimes commited by drunkards - yet again the responsibility is taken away from the criminal and put elsewhere.

With this logic then the extra money for speeding should come from the car manufacturers or retailers as they sold a car capable of breaking the law.

What a farce

New Labour - MY ****!

I almost got a free toaster with the points I had a few years ago!
Outrageous that the government can even consider this in light of how much they are currently robbing from the average motorist.

This new proposal is just sickening. God, I loathe this Politically Correct government. They are just so feckin' cynical.

Gotta vote them out asap. Or, I must the hell out of this ruined country.

Thumbs up

At least this is dramatically increasing my chances of scooping £50 from both paulr and 289 at the next election!

Some forces do offer you the choice of paying £95 (and no points) if you attend a 'speed awareness course' - only 6 or 7 forces currently doing it though.

Instead of increasing the fine, why not direct £5 from the £60 they already get? Afterall, surely these cameras haven't been used to purely generate revenue? Have they? Therefore it would seem right to redirect some of the money.

Ah, but Chris, this is a "surcharge", not a fine.

BIG difference, apparently!

The Home Office Minister on Newsnight last night was hopeless, in my opinion. Won't be marking her down for a glittering Ministerial career...

Unhappy

I'd rather not get caught speeding in the 1st place
I bet ya can't Given the variety of camera types, the dubious positioning (Read sneaky) and the lack of proper control means that everyone will get done for speeding within the next 12 months. Absolute guarantee. Just think over the past 6 months how many shocked "squeeky clean" mates have come to you bleating about recieving an NIP or parents/ grandparents etc.
Even insurance companies now only increase premiums minimally for 3 points because it's the norm now. If they didn't they'd be un competitive.
