How rude and inconsiderate are some people?
I was stood at the bus stop this morning, as were about 20 other people. There was an old lady who seemed to be getting a bit flustered as her bus came down the hill, I suspect she was trying to get her bus fares out of her bag. Anyway, she dropped her bag and everything went everywhere. I instantly knelt down and helped her pick her belongings up: Loose change, pension book (which was wet, so I dried it off the best I could with a tissue from my pocket), lipstick, umberella. You get the idea, everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink!
What annoyed me was the fact that not one other person gave her a hand, she was quite clearly distressed and needed the help.
Then, I was on the bus sitting at the door where people get off. The bus was packed and there was about 10/15 people standing. An old man had come downstairs to get off and the doors hadn't opened. He kind of muttered something (I think he may have had a speech impedement (sp?)) about the doors not opening. NOT ONE PERSON said anything to the driver. As I was sat down, my instinct was to lean forward and press the bell for him, which failed to work. EVERYONE saw this, but I even had to get up out of my seat and push past the suits to get to the nearest bell so the driver would open the doors before he drove away. When I sat down all eyes were on me, and I kind of felt a bit embarassed, FOR BEING HELPFUL!!!!!
What is it with the British? They get annoyed when people call them arrogant tw@ts, but then do **** like that! Have these people no respect whatsoever for their elders? Surely their parents must have raised them properly?!?!
Damn you!

I went to visit my wife in hospital yesterday i was waiting to cross the road and a car drew up at an empty space the driver put his car in reverse the lights came on.
Another car drew up behind him indicating right as if to say thats my space!
I stood waiting for him to move but he did not so i got fed up walked out in front of him pointed at his car demonstrated to him how to steer round the car in front and left him in no doubt that the car in front was getting that space
gave him a polite thumbs up as he drove away shaking head

Sorry, but that is Britain in 2004 for you.
In all seriousness I blame in no small part Margaret Thatcher's 'regime' in the 80's that convinced people it was a good thing to be selfish and have a 'dog eat dog' society. People laugh when I say that, but if you really think about it it's not so funny.
Regards,
tiggers.

I have a few examples of this, most recent an old dufffer parking in the last child space when politely aske to move called me a b@stard until i got out and politely asked him to refrain from insulting me as i had aksed politely. He apologised in the end but more to do with me being 17stone, 6' and looking angry i feel
One example, it happens from time to tiome and you cannot tar everybody with the same brush. There are decent people out there but you usually only hear about the to$$ers.
You helped the old lady so not everybody is bad are they.
One good turn and all that.

You did the right thing to help the old lady and the man on the bus. Congrats to you for that.
As Tiggers said, the world is becoming much more selfish now, so many people seem to act in a pig ignorant way like those you describe. I think too that it started in the Thatcher era when the philosophy of profiteering set off the mood of extreme self centred behaviour and greed. I still remember a group of people at work setting up a sale of items for so called charitable aims but putting aside a tidy percentage for their own use! It is almost as though greed is regarded as something to be proud of.

Yep, it all sounds too familiar unfortunately
Also, I was brought up to address my neighbours by their surname, ie Mr and Mrs Clapperton, Mr and Mrs Reid etc. I still do it, it's just respect. You wouldn't hear that from youngsters nowadays. (Listen to me ffs, Im 20! ) This country is slowly going downhill!
Saxo Boy. No I didn't take her purse, now away with your burberry jacket and go on throw some eggs at busses I bet you did. Oh and by the way, I saw two coppers in Colinton Mains this morning, not Oxgangs! You live in denial, even your brother admits to coming from there!

Slightly off-topic, but I thought I'd share it with you.
A few weeks ago, I popped into the supermarket to buy some sugar.
As I was walking out, an elderly lady was struggling with three bags of shopping, so I offered to help her to her car. "It's in the car park", she says.
So, we came out of the supermarket entrance and I went to turn left towards the parking area, but she informed that her car was not actually in this car park, but in one of the other shop's, 200 yards up the road.
Not a problem, I'll still take the bags to her car for her.
To cut a long story short, when we get to her car, there is her hubby sat in the car having a ***, waiting for his misses to bring back the shopping. Then he coolly gets out of the car and opens the boot for her. How thoughtful of him!
Bit my lip at the time, but find it quite amusing now.

If they can't help themselves then they should be shipped over to that Swiss euthanasia clinic.
If it wasn’t for doo gooders like you, The country would save a fortune on pension payouts etc... Also there would be more empty disabled parking spaces to abuse.
God I hate the smell of p!ss and Germaline!

Dunno if i'd lay the blame squarely at Thatcher's door, although i admit it was a factor. I'd also say the proliferation of car and computer ownership, leading to less personal interaction, has also eroded our respect for each other. In a car, or behind a screen, you can be whoever you want to be. In a face-to-face situation, you'd be put in your place pronto. Can't see it getting any better either, unfortunately...

I agree with you telboy. The internet is evil. Very evil. Infact, so evil that I am going to cut down my time on here and start interacting with real life people again.
What do you reckon you would be doing now if the net hadn't yet been invented?

Anyway, BACK ON TOPIC!
Something like this happens again. Do you:
a) Mutter allsorts of ungodly things under your breath
b) Speak up loud and clear
c) Be quiet and say nothing
???
Personally, i'd go for A. Let the surrounding culprits know they're worthless lazy pieces of pi*ey ****, but not loud enough to humiliate 40+ commuters infront of each other that they take turns to punch me in the mouth for pointing it out.
