Just got one of these great little units Question is on dashboard mounting. What have you found to be the most effective method? Is the non-slip mat enough, or do you use the plastic tray and windscreen suckers?
Also, has anyone managed to thread the power cable back behind the dashboard and into the lighter socket? I would like to avoid the wires trailing down the front of the dash if at all possible.

My car came with one installed. They have threaded the wire through the crack at the back of the clock panel and hard wired into something.
As for mounting, the unit is velcro'ed to the double sucker bracket which is stuck to the base of the windscreen and is resting on the non slip mat - so both methods to asnwer your question!

If you can get away with the sticky pad then your not really trying. Use the tray and suckers, put it in the right hand corner.
It is possible to feed the wire down the side of the dash near the A pillar and then out to the socket. Thread a bit of wire down there first to pull the little plug gently through.

Thanks all. I was speaking to a bloke at work who has one and he hardwired his into the interior light, running the wire up the A pillar. Might be a bit excessive, but I will try some of the methods suggested here.
If anyone else has any comments, please feel free to post them.
Cheers

Mine comes on with Ignition 1 so it is most likely spliced into the Stereo power supply which I think would be a lot easier than threading it all the way up the pillar!

Mine it to the right of the instrument binnacle, on top of the dash. It sits on the supplied bracket (but has some extra velcro, as the dash-mat stuff isn't good enough for high-speed roundabouts). It's easy to push the cable between the dash and the A-post trim. It then goes under the dash, and pops out of the trim on the RH side of the centre console, close to the cig lighter, where it is plugged in. I can send you some pics if you want.

Chris, mine sits on the dash, right on top in front of the steering wheel. That way, you can't miss it even when the ICE is at full tilt
I use the sticky mat stuff that caravaners use, but you need one patch Bluetacked to the dash and another one under the unit. It doesn't move even when braking very hard. This was supposed to be a temporary fitting, but it works so well I'm sticking (ha ha) with it. It's not very pretty, but I only plug it in when in unfamilar territory. It's hard-wired in, BTW, as is the laser jammer coupled to it.
Floyd did the fitting for me. He's a wizzard at it. His is also hard-wired in, cleverly hidden in the centre cubby-hole (Floyd is also a stealth freak ) It fits with the lid down and the lid doesn't effect operation.
Cheers,
Richard.

For your info here is the dealer installed setup I was talking about.
Not the subtlest of installations, but probably the easiest in terms of cable runs. The positioning is actually quite natural and is easy to glance over at. The laser sensor module has to be positioned in view of both front and back windscreens.

Mines not hard wired, but I stuck the little round velcro patch directley to the dashboard. It never moves and if youre careful you wont pull off the velcro when you remove the unit for updating.
Interesting ideas on the hard wiring though.

Installed mine yesterday - very similar to AJMs. I lifted out the clock and dropped the power cord down inside the dash. I then fed this wire along the join between the dash and the centre console (on the driver's side) and into the lighter socket. The laser detector wire was also pushed into the dash to take up the slack. It looks much better
Thanks for all the replies.
