Good education IS free
- The primary school of "My old man says its true so it must be"
- The secondary school of "Some bloke down the pub told me its true"
- The university of "It stands to reason"
Edited cos I didn't read ahead

I went to private school from the age of 4 to 16 as did my sister.
Parents of the kids at school where mix of very hard workers, (where both parents worked - in some cases just to pay the fees) to those whose parents are wealthy and send the kids to private school for its alledged snob value.
In some cases private schools have a better pupil to teacher ratio, but can find as good state schools around as well.

Marlborough College V St. Johns, marlborough.(State)
St johns walks over the college in most exam results.
Most top schools are just dumping grounds for rich parents who cant be arsed to deal with their kids.

Work hard
We've had Ez in nursery (£1000 pcm) since 5 months old as we couldn't afford one of us NOT working.
Now @ 4.5 she has started school and its actually cheaper - about £650 per month. We've always been paying, so there was no problem about continuing to do so + aftercare and holiday arrangements throw up the price of state stuff anyway (for 2 working parents) to not far off what we are paying for private.

I don't think its a case of all of the top schools being paid for - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/h.../a_level_1.stm
I looked up the A-Level results for my old school which was and still is a state school. I would say that anywhere in the top half of the 3000+ schools would be good!
