Is it possible to open a bank account in OZ whilst still a resident in the UK?
And if it is, how easy is it to transfer funds to and fro?
TIA

You have to provide photo evidence of living over here for a simple account AFAIK, so I think the answer to your question is no. However, I am not 100% sure on whether it is a complete impossibility if you are not a resident over here.

Thanks both of you.
I've emailed National Australia Bank asking if I can open account and failing that if my Aussie g/f can from the UK.
I'll post what I find out.
Worst case is that I'll have to wait until I get out there. No big deal really.

It may be possible for you to establish an account with the National prior to your arrival in Australia.
In order for us to assist you in opening an account, could you please email us with the following details no more than 8 weeks before you intend to arrive:
- Your full legal name
- The address of where you will be staying/arriving in Australia
- Your current contact telephone number and mailing address
- Your date of birth
- Your occupation
- Confirmation that the account will be used for private purposes
Once this information is received, we will onforward it to the Branch. We will then send you a form called Identification Reference for a Signatory to an Account - S21.
This form needs to be completed and posted to the branch. It will provide them with information needed to start the identification process for operating your account.
Please note that you will only be able to operate the account as a credit account until you visit the branch in Australia to satisfy the identification requirements. Any interest earned on your account will be taxed at a non-resident's rate.
