i am looking to buy a piano for my seven year old, me and (when they are older) the younger kids.

my kid is a beginer and im as good as (sat grade 1 20 years ago!) so there will be lots of practice. this makes me think i should get a digital as i can use headphones.....i can see it being a problem if i want to practice when i get home late and the kids our in bed. our house is a modern one so the dinning room (with piano) is hardly soundproofed from the lounge or the kids rooms upstairs.

but.....is a digital a daft idea because its not a "real" piano ans i should compromise on practice time ahead of compromising on a pretned piano?

budget is 1000-1500 for either.

any thoughts?

T

ps- anyone else learn as an adult? my target is to get good enough to play modern stuff- elton john, bettles, etc- to a standard that allows me to enjoy what im doing- i dont want to turn pro!

I'm not a piano player, but I think the way to go is one of those "hammer action" Yamaha digital pianos. Don't know how much they are though...

Yamaha stuff is top notch. Well within your price range plus with a digital clav you can get away with no noise using headphones.

I use http://www.starland.co.uk/pages/kd/Welcome.html for my keyboards. Excellent prices, expertise and service.

Is this a daft suggestion, 700 quid on both?

I'm sure you'd do that if you had room for it. Headphones for practise and the proper things for, well, playing properly!

If you are serious get a real piano - totally different to a keyboard.
If you really need the headphones, make sure you get an electric one with weighted keys - this will give the feel of a real piano

Been thinking of doing the same myself. Went across to a good music shop in Guildford (Andersons I think but it's in the yellow pages) which has a good range of electric pianos. Cheap ones started at about £800 but the keys felt a bit soft. Was recommended a Roland at £1500 or a Yamaha at £2000. Maybe I'll take up the guitar instead ...

I started to play a while back, using a Yamaha digital piano - I'm by no means an expert but it does sound fantastic. Space and convenience was my issue, so digital was the only way to go.

I was surprised at how easy to play it was really, coming from eights years of Strat playing. I reckon it makes much more sense than a guitar in terms of musical theory. (flamesuit on?)

Let me know if you need any good sheet music links
