often you can get a pretty good quote from your mortgage lender (assuming that you have a mortgage).

how come the mortgage lenders agreed the mortgage without this?? Strange, we had to provide proof that we had the necessary insurance docs. Phone them straightaway!

some are more fussy than others. first time i had to send all docs etc. next mortgage someone 'phoned up and said "have you arranged buildings insurance with another company?" i said yes, and that was the end of it.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys... I'm on the phone to the banks (one of anyway).

The quote I've had so far is less for a year than my car is per month... so I'm not complaining

Nationwide were the cheapest for us, but Tesco/directline/barclycard where all in the same ball park.

It is amazing how much this can change. Going from a new(ish) two bed terrace to a 1930's two bed semi almost doubled the buildings insurance.

All being done through the solicitor... for the record my lender is Abbey National and I've checked with the solicitor, the lender does not require to see proof of insurance, though they do require you be insured???

Well... I phoned a few people

Abbey 115
Natwest 106
Nationwide 72...

And I can get the Nationwide one upgraded to all singing and dancing cover for 81 total. Now that sounds cheap, for the sake spending another hour on the phone ringing more people what am I gonna save.. maybe another tenner, not worth my time.

So Nationwide it is then, unless someone tells me some horror story in the next few hours.

Thanks all...

Thumbs up

i had nationwide before and they seemed very reasonable. in fact i'm thinking about going back to them as the punters that i'm with at the moment keep increasing the premium *and* the excess - how does that work out?

I'm with Esure - they beat Tesco, Direct Line and the rest by a long way. More cover for less money

I went with esure, cheaper than everywhere else by miles, and their standard cover was better with values and excess ect.

saved about £300 compared to my lenders policy quote. (for contents as well)

Top tip: try to get the same company to insure the buildings and contents. If your house burns down then you won't have 2 bickering companies argueing about who covers items attached to walls etc...It does happen!
