Vacuum cleaner recommendations.

Hi,
Coincidentally another vacuum cleaner thread but didn't want to hi-jack so ....
My 1986(ish) vintage Vax has finally bitten the dust. Parts are either obselete or, according to the local Vax agent, are 'rather hard to come by ....'. So it's off shopping BUT I have zero clue about VCs (post 1986 anyway ...) so I'm after suggestions.
I reckon on a cylinder one with all the tools. Must be fairly light as well as the other 'arf is preggers at the moment and not too strong at the best of times ... It must obviously be good at picking up dirt and MUST last! As I said I have had the Vax for nearly 20 years ....
All suggestions welcome ...
Cheers
Dave

From: Please excuse my Spelling - its not the best !!
I would guess at a dyson to be honest.
They seem to be very popular at the moment and seem to pick the dirt / cat hairs up better than my pevious Electrolux (??) or whatever it was thing ever did.
Can't say I know much about vacuum cleaners to be honest (or partically care !)but it does me !!

Ah, the 'search' facilty .... ta scoob_babe .... must get a memory upgrade for self ... those CF cards are dead cheap at the moment ... :-)
Well, looking through various threads and having spoken to the missus (who's just got up from her mid-afternoon nap ...) looks like it might well be a Henry Hoover! Best hoover the wife has used apparently plus they get used in just about every office you see. There must a be a reason - apart from the price.
Ta for all replies ...
Cheers

If money is no question, get a kirby
We had a dyson, until it blew up after only 18 months (DC07, paid £200 from costco)
Ironic thing is only 2 days before we had a kirby salesman around, told us about how our dyson was designed to blow up/fail so that the companies made more money from the customer.
Made me laugh when he correctly pointed out a contradiction marked on the dyson:
One sticker said, no loss of suction. yet another on the dust/shyte compartment said max fill - you must empty
.
Although i was so impressed with kirby i declined to buy it cos it was so expensive (£1500 after negotiating and trading in our DC07 for £150), however in hindsight i should have done.
If you want a 25 year guarantee and probably the best hoover in the world and you've got £1500 +, then get a kirby.

BTW they're also on Ebay, reconditoned for £600

Ta for all the advice. Just ordered a 'Henry' from John Lewis online. They give 2 years warrenty plus I can hassle them 'cos I know where the shop is !! They were *about* the cheapest. But if anyone wants cheaper try: http://www.dialavac.co.uk/ they have reconditioned ones for £69 (I presume inc. VAT), free delivery and 12 months guarantee.
Thanks again.
Dave
PS: trouble is I dunno wot colour it'll be ..... doh!!
Henry seem robust. I wouldn't touch a Dyson their uprights have a very poor reputation for reliability. My mother has a DCO4 and says it is no good for dog fur.
I looked into this earlier in the year and was all set to buy a Sebo upright and then got a Miele "Cat and Dog" for my Birthday. Very pleased with it so far as it picks up my dogs fur from my carpet better than my parents Dyson does at their house or my old Panasonic. The Reliability report will have to wait (Hope fully many years!) I spoke to sales men in John Lewis and they said Dyson's keep coming back under warranty and if you look at the returns pile at Costco it has Dyson's in regularly could be the amount sold or poor reliability.
Also Which did a report into vacuum cleaners and I think they didn't recommend the Dyson because of this.
As to hire shops probably find that they buy Henry’s so cheap at trade deals that they just bin them when they wear out as they are cheap and cheerful.

Bought a henry as my old dear has one for when she doesnt feel like lugging the kirby out. Light but very powerful, comes with an array of accessories, loads of spare bags and an extra pipe so you can clean up the stairs without changing plug sockets. Not bad for around £90.
Dysons are a bit of a gimmick. Look nice and supposedly good cleaners but Ive heard nothing but complaints on their reliability.
Simon.
