Well after waiting 4 weeks for it I got my new LG 44" DLP TV on Tuesday, and it's fooked it's got 3 dark bands running down the screen which you can see when there is any dark parts in programs/films etc, so been back to Currys for about the 5th time and told them the problem, now they have arranged for an engineer to come and look at it on the 31st Dec to check it out.

Now what would you guys do if he turns around and says we need to take it away ?? I'm not hapy with having a TV that I have only had since Tuesday and it needs to be repaired I am in two minds weather to say take it and I want my money back and go for something different ( something big but with a tube ) or say look I want another one as I'm not happy with having it repaired considering it only came outta the box on tuesday.

Your views would be very grateful

Did you pay on your credit card ?

Give the TV back, demanding a refund. If Currys aren't playing ball ask your credit card company refund your money.. which they do automatically, then Currys will have to prove you owe them the money.

If it needs to go back, insist on a new one or a full refund.
7 alternatives available at Empire, upto 57" screen.

Sale of goods act 1979 as ammended
Do a search for it and know your rights. I (foolishly bought something from Time Computers so did a lot of this)
IIRC you have the right to a repair, replacement or refund if it doesnt do what is says on the tin.
Pick it up (well, 2 of you) take it to the shop (it wil be busy as it is near Xmas) create a scene and you will more than likely get the ££ back there and then.

• SALE OF GOODS
Together with the law applying to services, these are the only laws that every consumer should really know by heart.
While laws concerning sale of goods date back 100 years, the only phrase you need to memorise is 'The Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended)'. The 'as amended' is important because it refers to two laws in the 1990s which extended the basic 1979 Act: the Sale and Supply of Goods Act 1994 and the Sale of Goods (Amendment) Act 1995. Also, using the phrase tells the trader that not only do you know basic consumer law, you know it has been amended too.
The Sale of Goods Acts lay down several conditions that all goods sold by a trader must meet. The goods must be:
• of satisfactory quality
• as described
• fit for purpose
'Satisfactory quality' covers minor and cosmetic defects as well as substantial problems and it also means that products must last a reasonable time. But it does not give you any rights if a fault was obvious or pointed out.
'As described' refers to any advertisement or verbal description made by the trader.
'Fit for purpose' covers not only the obvious purpose of an item but any purpose you queried and were given assurances about by the trader.
" The Act covers second-hand items and sales. "
If something you buy from a trader does not meet any of these conditions, you are entitled to your money back. You are not entitled to any repair, replacement or credit note, only your money back.
So if you want to accept a repair, and many people do, make sure you put in writing that you are reserving your right to 'reject' the item if the repair is not satisfactory. You are only entitled to your money back from the trader you bought it from, not from the manufacturer, wholesaler or importer. And it is up to them to collect the faulty item, although most times it is easier to return it yourself.
The Act covers second-hand items and sales. But if you buy privately, your only entitlement to your money back is if the goods are not 'as described'.
All this is pretty straightforward and easy to remember, although if there is a dispute, the customer has to prove their case, not the trader.
The Acts give the consumer six years from the time they buy something to make a claim. But these rights do not extend to getting an immediate refund for all that time. You only have a relatively short period to get a full refund. After this time, you will be deemed to have 'accepted' the item. If it then turns out to faulty, you will have to claim compensation - see Enforcing the Law.

Loewe 40" CRT If it really must have a tube and be huge. Alternatively, look at plasmas such as Panasonics PW6 and buy from John Lewis to get their 5 year guarantee. Should be looking at about £3k.

I'd go take it back now & kick off, it's not fit for purpose so demand a replacement or refund.

I'd take it straight back down there OR get a refund on your card and then tell them to pick it up. If its broken now its not going to get any better in the future IMO ....

Wah,
I'm sure CRT stands for Cathode Ray Tube, which is the 'older' type technology nearly all TV's use, using a so called 'tube'.
This is used in comparisons, i.e CRT, or LCD, or PLASMA, or PROJECTOR. If only I could persuede the missus we really DO NEED a 42" plasms. She's having none of it.

shame you didnt come accross a few threads (One by myself) concerning this model... Got thinking about one a few months ago.. Visited a few palces and got chatting. Could feel that they where having problems selling them. 1 Guy told me they where a nightmare waiting to happen and he didnt realy want to sell them .But his boss had a load cheap (Cos they new about the problems) and was trying to bang them out. But they do look nice.

My advice. Do not let them send the engineer. Inform them you will bring it back today....... Get some mates and take it right in to the shop and stick it in the entrance. Start Kicking off.

(Take some empty petrol cans ,Get a mate to adopt the "mental nutter" look. Shouting out Thats he going "on one" if the manager doesnt sort this out.. might work.)

NEXT TIME DONT BE A IDIOT AND SHOP THERE...............

I too was waiting for the LG DLP to make it's appearance, and when I went to see it the dealer (independant TV dealer - specialist type guy) he said it was crap (his words) and he had sent it back as he would not put up with people coming back with them and harming his long good reputation, I was highly recommended to look at a Toshiba 36 zp38 and on looking at What Video test on these I have decided that it is what I'll buy Toshiba 36"
It is also available without the DVD and Video cheaper and has a better sound than the Panasonic which I also looked at, think Comet are doing them for a competitive price now as well,

John Lewis is the most honest retailer in the country. They realy only stock the better stuff and the prices are far cheaper than expected. Also great guarantees and after sales.

Currys are really bad at dealing with any faulty goods i will never shop there again and they are in the same group as Dixon's and the Link group theory is the customer is always wrong and once they have your money you can go whistle if you have a problem.

Well went down today instead of Monday called in at 16:30 ( shut at 17:00 ) and demanded a refund imagine my surprise when they just said ok but we will have to pick it up 1st oh yeah fast at picking it back up again but took 4 months to drop the ****** off, looked at both the Toshiba 36ZP38 & the Panasonic TX36PD30C had to laugh that the Tosh was on the wrong stand completely !!, I am now torn between the two the Tosh has 5.1 sound but I already have a 5.1 system, the Panasonic has virtual dolby and I believe that thats the only difference between the two but please correct me if I am wrong

Thats a result! They must be aware of the problems with the dlp, probably had a memo through, the sound was the thing that pointed me towards the Tosh, and the extra speakers and oommpphh of the amp, plus of course it has been voted "best tv of the year" by What Video magazine and at the time the Pana was about £200 dearer, good luck,
Gary
