Went to see it this morning at Leicester Square.
Determined to see it before any other *****'s! LOL!
Superb film, superb cinema, superb atmosphere.
I was thoroughly entertained and was completely immersed in the film.
On an anorak note, Jackson has done well to stick to the story as much as he has and has indeed lifted actual dialogue from the books to the films, which is great.
As there is a spolier warning notice on this thread the death of the 'Witch King of Angmar' was exactly spot on, as was the last scene of the film.
For me, the films dont convey the terror of scenes such as in the Paths of the Dead and the Bridge at Khazad Dum for that matter, but still out of this world.
I was well impressed, even the Wife was, and she does not quite have the same appreciation of the whole thing as I do.
JK Rowling - top that if you can!

I thought it was stunning. 3hrs 20 went with virtually no-one in the cinema moving.
Being picky I would have liked to see the confrontation between Gandalf and the Witch King at the gates of gondor before the riders arrive, and the palantir episode @ isengard was glossed over ( although I understand it is in the DVD ).I was somewhat disappointed in shelob, after the big buildup as well.
Today won't be the last time I see it in the cinema though.

Thinking about it further, yes the confrontation at the gate was something I was expecting.
And although I was perturbed when Frodo and Sam got split up before they met Shelob, the scene worked well and was scary (although I definately have arachnophobia anyway!)
The whole storyline about the great diversionary attack wasn't very subtle for me and a little rushed. I was expecting the 'Voice of Sauron' to come out and bandy words with the Men of Gondor before the Black Gate opened.
All a little rushed, but in the books these are long passages, so difficult to do.
I am not being critical or anything, I 100% believe that no one could have done a better job, and will be going again to try to take it all in.
I am sure that Jackson will have loads of extras in the DVD, cant wait!

18 ???
BWAAHAAHAHAH!
18 years from pensionable age maybe
I hope to see it eventually. When the rush dies down. And I've read the books so often that no one can spoil it for me anyway

Is it just me or did the big elephant things remind you of those bricks on legs in Star Warts ? (that includes Ewan's acting btw )
Just like in the TT where they're doing their big group hug/overblown ceremony bit (like at the end of every SW )
I'll vote for it to win every oscar if the extended DVD does not add anything else to the end (unless it's the damage to the shire which was noticeably missing). Jesus, that went on a bit long.
Best behaved audience I've ever sat in - I felt ashamed to be munching my popcorn.

Just come back from the Cinema, and ohhh lordy what an amazing film, really finishes off the whole saga true and proper.
From the amazing battle scenes to the gollum graphics, if there is any justice in the world the palms of Jackson will be crossed with a statue of gold.

Saw it yesterday for free (some halfwit left his tickets in the automatic ticket machine ) and all I can say is WOW!
The battle scenes were incredible. As was the rendering of Gollum. I am certain the Palantir scene is in the DVD, as is the Scouring and Sauromans ultimate demise, if a little different from the book. A little more could have been done with the Paths of the Dead, but again, lets see what the DVD brings us.
We went to see the exended versions of the 1st 2 films last week as a build up (saw Two Towers free too, cinema fooked up ) and I'm glad we did as it built up the excitement in readiness. I'll prob let the Xmas audiences dissipate before going again, but I shall see this at least 3 times. May I please suggest that next Christmas they show the trilogy in all it's extended forms to get us ready for The Hobbit at Christmas 2005. Please! That would complete the finest 5 years of cinema ever. What could ever top it ?
A work of genius deserving to sweep the board at every awards ceremony.

Abso-bloody-lutely fantastic.
There are few films which grab me and drag me in to the point of excluding other things: this was one of 'em. I even managed to ignore the stoned half-life thing next to me that was trying his best to do a Darth Vader impression, and also producing his own chemical and biological weapons . Time flew.
This (section of the ) book was always my favourite, so it was always going to be a good 'un, but I'm blown away at how well the film worked. No Saruman? "So what?" say I! Some scenes were exactly how I pictured them in my minds' eye, which says more about Tolkien's writing and Jackson's vision than my imagination
I was hoping that the film would be good, but this really outdid my expectations. This is *so* unusual in the world of hype that we now live in.
Jackson has got to sweep the boards with this IMHO. It's a fantastic work of art. I don't know whether the "director's" DVD will actually be any better...
I'm impressed. you can tell, can't you?

Lord of the Rings Funny
And for those of you who have the R2 LOTR Two Towers Extended DVD, this is the easter egg you're missing.

Just got back from watching this too, from an almost empty cinema, I rang and booked my tickets 15 minutes before the film was due to start too
Pretty Amazing, although I would have preferred the battle scene with the dead to go on a bit longer, special effects were very good, except the spider scene could have been better
Ive never read the books either, maybe I will now

The only special effects i thought were crap were when Aragorn was being crowned, everytime he turned round to look out over the peolple the first lot looked like cardboard cut out, much like in star wars: a new hope, when luke, han, chewy, r2 and c3po were being given medals.

The only other bad bit of special effects was when the doors of Mordor Opened, the horse to the far right didnt look right, you could clearly see it was very badly superimposed over the backdrop, the other horses looked fine tho

Plus when Aragorn was being crowned, I'm "positive" you could see the moustache/beard was stick on
Great film, nearly (but not)spoilt by the local neanderthugs and their kids. And the cinema decided to put all their popcorn in bags ffs. Give the ******* a trough, it'd be quieter

The bit where Frodo runs into the mountain to throw the ring into the lava (the mountain probably has a name but I can't remember!) look totally fake. It reminded me of the scene in Indina Jones (the 3rd one) where he is walking accross the invisible bridge. Blue screen at it's best
Good film but the last 20 mins bored the hell out of me!
