Question

My fiancee now won't mention to our friends if I've bought or sold my car, as she is embrassed with how many I've gone through recently!

I'm 30 (nearly 31 ) and I've had cars since I was 17, so in nearly 14 years, I've had:

Car 1: 1988 VW Golf 1.3C (3 years before it was stolen)
Car 2: 1990 Metro Clubman 1.3 (6 months before my sister had it, during Golf ownership)
Car 3: 1989 Volvo 340DL 1.4 (3 years)
Car 4: 1995 Citroen ZX 1.8 Furio (3.5 years)
Car 5: 1997 UK Impreza Turbo (14 months)
Car 6: 1999 UK Impreza Turbo (20 months)
Car 7: 1990 VW Golf GTI 8v (8 months)
Car 8: 2000 UK Impreza Turbo (4 months)
Car 9: 1996 Peugeot 306 XSi (4 months)

Car 10 will probably happen soon despite me saying I don't need one!!

The thing is over the last three cars, I've probably lost £500 on the Golf and nothing on the MY00 or the Pug!! I know I've lost a lot more on the other cars!!!

I've decided to run $hitters until I'm on an even keel again (not saving for a wedding) so I think if I buy wisely I don't need to lose money on them!!! Maybe I should become a trader, or at least a student in the school of POC!!

Cool

No

I did about 25 in the first 7 years of ownership + bikes as well...

A car is a commodity - easy come, easy go.

Good question though, have you had more cars than girl-friends?

Can you really count No.2 and No.3 as cars?

Don't see having that many cars in that many years as an achievement. However, owning 5 cars at the one time is far more impressive Like my friend.....

Budget motoring is far more fun anyway. I preceded my Scooby with a Volvo 240GLE from the auction for £50 while between new cars and waiting 3 months for the Scooby (HAHA- waiting times for a Scoob back in 1999!).

Fantastic car. Had a comedy backfire, which raised SO many laughs in the area everytime I drove around, had an engine which looked like it belonged in a tractor (the block was bright red), came with a wasp production unit (ie, nest) in the boot as std equipment, did 20mpg to match the Scooby, and drove like a tank.

However, with a £50 car, anyone tries to cut you up, and you don't give a **** - especially in a Volvo tank.

Best bit was selling it MOT-less and tax-less for £150 to a student once the Scoob arrived. Result.

I used to buy bangers from the auction and run them till they died so that list doesn't sound excessive to me.
Have no idea how many cars I've had but has to be at least 3 a yr for 12 or so yrs of driving.
How many good cars I've had is another matter-perhaps 6 being generous.

Exclamation

I was 17 back in 1990 and I was fortunate enough to have my parents buy my first car for me.

Sorry Simon, I re-read your post. The 1988 bit is the year of the car, rather than when I owned it!

The Volvo was a good car!!!!

Bear in mind I was up in Manchester doing my degree.

The Golf got stolen and I wanted a car that did not attract any attention, what would you buy...... hmmmm.... what about a Volvo!!

Rear wheel drive, powerful enough to cruise at near triple figures, good fuel economy for the trips up and down the M6/M42/M40, had a spoiler , carried all my stuff back from Uni and I got my speeding ticket in it (96.6mph on the A3 )

I think keeping a car for 3 years is about right, but life changes and the car has to as well to cope.

I don't see owning that many cars as an achievement, I just wondered if anyone else did the same!

Less of an achievement, more of a mental illness!!!

Here is my list:

1) 1.0 Metro biggest piece of sh!te I have ever owned
2) 1.6 Mark 3 escort fitted with XR3 carb, suspension, dash etc on 14" steels, no spoilers & a 1.6 badge
3) 2.0 Manta GTE. Got crashed into and stolen in a few months of buying it
4) 2.9 Sierra GLS 4x4 with 4x4 badge removed to look like crappy 2.0
5) 2.0 Manta GTE at the same time as above
6) 2.9 Sierra XR4x4 with a £7000 engine very stealthy ex track demonstrator & ex-turbo tecnics car It was converted back to normally aspirated but with higher power then I bought a twin turbo conversion to re-fit with mental engine but got bored
7) 2.8 Sierra XR4i. This lead to fun because once I forgot I was driving a rear drive instead of my 4x4 which I owned at the same time Had a spectacular spin in that one
8) 2.0 Lancia Delta Integrale 16 valve. Probably the worse mistake in my life buying this 2 weeks after buying it I got a company car and I still owned the two above too and it just sat in my garage
9) 1.8 Mondeo diesel estate company car. Strangely loved it to bits
10)3.0 Mark 2 3.0s Capri. Bought dirt cheap with no miles on it and dry stored in my garage.
11)1.7 Puma company car. Love this one to bits even with it's faults and lack of power.
12) 2.8 Sierra XR4i again I bought this as a track car but met my fiancee and gave up with cars
13) 2.0 Sierra bought just because I collect crap
14) 2.8i Capri. Never had time to drive it did <500 miles in that one.
15) Vauxhall Carlton gsi 3000 Fun fun fun

My list is really short and I am not going to bother!

Coming up to 40 cars owned. I'm 30 years old next year. Got a list somewhere..

I have always bought and sold well, I HATE losing money on cars. I reckon my depreciation costs are zero. I have made on some cars, lost very very little on most. I am not a dealer, just a private punter.

Currently own 4 nice, non depreciating motors.

24 and only 5 cars myself...

1990 Nova 1.2 FLING... had it for 9 months
1992 Cavalier 1.6 Expression... had it for 18 months
1992 Fiesta XR2i... had it for 12 months
1995 Golf GTI 16v... had it for 18 months (loved it!)
1999 Golf GTI 1.8T... had it for 2 months and want to change it already!

So, hopefully by next spring/start of summer, car number 6 will be on the list...

How come you've had 14 cars in the last year and presumably, just 3 in the 5 years before that?
