Any one know anything about TV's (not not transvestites). I keep seeing plasma screens and wondering if they are any good / reliable. Are they better than a conventional TV? Also any one know good sites for best prices?

ukpricerunner is good website to compare prices. As is Kelkoo.

After trawling around the internet came to the conclusion that pioneers and panasonics are the best.

Picked the best online price took it Martin Dawes they price matched it and we took it then.

Glad we did as when we got it home it had dent in the top corner of the screen surround so we took it back and swapped for another. If it had been bought online we would probably be still waiting for it to be collected.

Picture quality is superb.

To the best of my knowledge CRT is always better quality picture-wise than plasma and under half the price. LCD may compete in the quality stakes, but again is more than double the price.

I'm in the market for a top quality CRT tv (1500 quid level) as space is not at a premium.

Not exactly a scientific answer, just my opinion.

I have been looking at this for over a year now and done loads of research, the one I was almost going to buy was the 42pd3000 from Hitachi which was voted plasma of the year last year, but on calming down and looking at it rationally I noticed that the extended warranty on plasmas is a minimum of £399 for 3 years which made me wonder why, are they expecting them to definately break down within that time? I then read an article on the new enhanced crt tv's and am now pretty sure I am going to purchase a Toshiba 36zp38 which is currently one of the best looking ones along with the panasonic 36" although the panasonic sound system lets it down a bit, good site to try is TV

The new high definition plasmas are superb, if fed with the right source. Pioneers have HDMI fed via the digital video out on their players. DVI is similar. Go to a specialist and see them demo'd properly as places like Currys really haven't got a clue. Watch their eyes glaze over when you ask about progressive scan! Pioneer, Panasonic, Hitachi and now JVC are the front runners, but don't be tempted by low prices. Many of the cheap plasmas (Richer Sounds) are a few years old, and the technology really jumped in quality and reliability recently. When you know which you prefer, find the best price on the net and then get John Lewis to price match it and get their 5 year guarantee as a bonus.

Pixels still "go" to often on Plasma's for my money. Once the pixels have blown theres no fixing it so if pixels blowing are not covered under warranty stear clear.

Stick with CRT until next "generation" plasma's come out.
Unless money is no option, then get big LCD.

Why not consider a projector, imagine playing your playstation on a 80" screen with surround sound.

All I can say, and this isn't science, is that I come into contact with a lot of plasma screens through work and I have found very serious reliability problems. There is no doubt that new ones can look good but a large number of the screens that we have installed have failed. They have a one year warranty for parts and labour and 2 years parts warranty on the actual screen. Once outside that they are beyond economic repair and we bin them. Last quote I had for a repair was £3000 on a screen that we can now buy in for £2195.

They are selling like hotcakes this year, from what I can see, but my experience is that I couldn't recommend a plasma. Your milage may differ.

Plasma is not the way to go if you want to buy now.... They just are not relaible. Maybe in a year or so...

I have been looking for 18 months now, have you seen a footy match on a Plasma? they do NOT handle motion well at all - it all blurrs (like those early telly cameras? remember? where a light image would stay for agaes?)

To my mind a 36 inch CRT is THE answer right now and at about £1099 they are fair value - BUT they are as heavy as FUKC!!

So, if my Sony 29" went wonky tomorrow what would I buy? well, a 32" CRT flat widescreen! (36" are just too heavy for my oak cabinet!)
