Question

Hi

My Fiancee's golf mists up really badly and freezes on the inside & so does my Carlton My Carlton I can live with because I don't use it daily but why do they mist up so badly that it looks like it's rained on the windows but inside?

Is there anything you can do to stop/help this?

Thanks

Paul

Got to be a perished seal(s).

One of my MR2Ts used to do that because of the shagged rubber on the drivers door.

My Carlton has been damp so that one I can understand but the Golf isn't damp I will check the seals later on the golf if it isn't too dark. My Carlton had ice on the inside of the sunroof last night I kept getting ice falling on my head when I went round corners

Thanks

Make sure that ifn the heater has a recirc/fresh air lever, it's set to Fresh Air.

If it still does it, I'd suspect the heater matrix: it only has to have a tiny hole, and it'll mist up the windows.

Paul,

I used to have an Alfasud that did this. The only cure was to take all the interior out and find the source of the leak (not such a big job in those days ). When I'd done this I then dried out the carpets and seats. Problem solved

To find a leak on a seal - rub oil around it. Shut it and the see where there's no oil on the mating half.

As for dessicants try salt IIRC

You might not think its damp inside but it is. You are just used to it thats all. Try driving with the heater on full blast all the time and the windows wound down. If that fails, you will have to strip out the carpets and find the source.

I bought an old escort recently that had obviously been standing a while. Had the same problem but a good long run dried it out and its fine now.

Thanks I hadn't heard of using salt.

I will look into these then. I think I will have to take all the interior out of my Carlton anyway It's taking forever to dry out The damn thing is too big for my garage

Try giving the windows a really good clean - I had this on my last car when I bought it, the windows were filthy on the inside, a good clean reduced misting significantly.

Question

Paul

Not sure if the Carlton has one but take a lookunder the bonnet towards the bulkhead. Some cars have a big trough there which acts as the air intake for the heating and ventilation system. Water can collect there so make sure there's nothing blocking the drain holes at either end (or in the middle).

Cheers
Kav

PS - Re getting hold of desiccants on your other thread. [Viz Top Tip]Go out and buy 25 pairs of reasonably expensive binoculars. Open up the boxes and get the tiny sachets of silica gel out. Empty these sachets into a larger bag and use as required. Discard the binoculars and packaging,. [/Viz Top Tip]

If it's a Golf, it's the heater matrix!

It was a recall on the mk2 Golfs! If not, it's a pain in the @rse job, as most of the dash has to be removed!!!

Scary moment in my first car (mk2 Golf 1.3 C) when what looked like white smoke was coming out of the stereo, dashboard, vents, etc! It was just steam as the heater matrix was going out in style!!!

If it's just moisture in the car then check:

* Open the bonnet and check the drain holes by the bulkhead, both sides.
* Check drain holes under the front doors and make sure they are clear
* Replace the waterproof membrane in the doors

I had blocked drain holes in the doors and the membrane was ripped. As well as that, because I parked under trees during hte summer and autumn, leaves had fallen between the bonnet and into the engine bay, along with the sap, it bunged up the drainholes and water seeped into the cabin, via the bulkhead!!

Thanks for all the repies. If it is the heater matrix on the golf it can stay that way and I won't tell her

The Carlton has got channel like that I have cleared the ends but not the middle, it's always too dark at night to look at it these days

My GF has an R reg Astra MK3 which mists so bad that if the heater isn't on full blast the windsceen mists up in seconds. She has to drive with a window open but even then its very bad. The inside of the windows are soaked and I think its quite dangerous. My Scoob doesn't have any and I don't use the heater for the first 10 miles.

However, the car is still under warranty from Vauxhall till April. Would it be worth taking the car back and making them find out what was wrong? I thought it might just be the way the car is but if theres a fault I'd hope they would sort it under warranty. Its just quite hard to get them to do anything under warranty.

It has A/C too if that makes a difference.

So using the A/C may sort the issue too? does the A/C have to be set on cold to work (You can tell I don't have A/C on my Scoob can't you?) If their might be something phsyically wrong with I shall hassle the dealership until they do something about it.

As for sex in the cars, her Astra is the only one we are would do it in. I wouldn't even **** my GFs married best mate in my Impreza let alone my GF, had tobe her car instead

A/c is the quickest way to clear your windows in wet weather and no, it doesn't need to be cold - I leave mine on all year round. That keeps the seals lubed, windows clear and leave me cool in the summer. A/c is a great de-humidifier.
