I need something to record tv programmes/films with. As I don't have either a VCR or DVD player I'm thinking along the lines of:
1)seperate VCR & DVD player
2)combined VCR/DVD player
3)DVD recorder (not sure which format)
Option 3 appeals the most but I don't want to end up with a Betamax.
Any suggestions, personal recommendations, advice on good deals?

forget VCR unless you want to swap tapes with other folk.

Go for DVD or sky+ if you have sky.. etc

Thumbs up

Panasonic DVD-RAM = £299

Philips DVD+R = £250

Choose which format you think may win - out of DVD-R or DVD+R - and buy one for Xmas

I went for the Panasonic .......... that, alone, may suggest you jump the opposite way!!

If you are without Sky (i.e. you are terrestial TV), go for a Pace Twin. Hard disk recorder built in and no messing about with tapes or silver round disk thingys.

I've had one for a while, upgraded the hard disk and the thing is great. Instant access to any recorded program.

Cheers

Thanx for the link Ian, I checked it out and it's an interesting piece of kit, but I would also like the option of playing DVD's. I only have a terrestrial tv and I don't have Sky.
So far I have seen DVD recorders for around £200, don't know if the're any good or not.

Question

Did Tescos advertise Pioneer DVD recorders for £199?? or was it Sainsburys?

Combined VCR/DVD, great for saving space/wires but not really much else. (Note: I have a personal hatred of combo devices!)

DVD recorder formats: DVD+R will go to 9Gb (ish) by April 04, almost 2x the current capacity. Maybe hold on for this so you get the latest & greatest or a cheaper outgoing model.

DVD-RAM, mainly a Panasonic thing, the discs come in (or used to) a caddy so better protected from scratches (think a big MiniDisc).

I don't think any of the recordable DVD formats are going away in the short term. The only issue was compatability with read only machines and all formats seem to have this covered now.
