In much the same way as all drivers can be fined, given penalty points or disqualified from driving for various offences - why don't we apply that to other aspects of our behaviour.

Say we all start off with a twenty point allocation, should you commit a minor drug offence or act in an abusive manner while under the influence of alcohol for example you get a fine and a deduction of points depending on the seriousness of the misdemeanour. Should you run out of your twenty points then you get fitted with a lo-jack and confined to home outside of the hours of work (should they have jobs).

Pretty vague idea but hopefully you get my drift. In much the same way as revenue can be generated by driving offences let other offences that are usually dealt with by caution start becoming revenue generating - such revenues could then be put back into providing better drug-awareness or alcohol-abuse schemes for example.

At the same time, we remove that crappy element of society from the streets who continually flaunt our laws as they know the nanny state isn't interested in non-revenue generateing initiatives and will only give them a slap on the wrist at most.

Just a thought.

Why not just enforce the laws we have and stop handing out the minimum sentence?

How about putting more resources into the Police forces and allowing them to catch criminals rather than cripling them with red tape?

How about keeping politics and policing seperate so rather than chasing headline-grabbing statistics, the Police can do their job?

It'd be a start...

Agreed, but seen as the legal system is loath to pass anything other than a slap on the wrist or the lightest possible sentence then perhaps we have to look at other ways of punishing these miscreants.
