I've been thinking (easy now), we maintain our homes, we get our cars serviced and we (well some) look after our bodies, but how many of us keep our heads on the straight and narrow.
I feel the need for some, thing. maybe not quite therapy ,or councilling, or meditation, or a guru, or any stuff that people think is crazy, or for crazy people.
I'm not crazy, yet, but sometimes I'm a donkey on the edge.

Are you interested in something like a martial art, or maybe t'ai chi or similar? A lot of people speak very highly of the calming / destressing / perspective-gaining aspects of these.
Alternatively, as Bill Hicks would say: a couple of dried grams of Psilocybe Semilanceata would squeegee your "third eye" so it sparkles

just need to find something absorbing as a hobby. I go fishing for sea trout in the dark! A 4-5 pounder which spends half the time in the air soon helps you out of the doldrums.

I'm able to work 7am till 5pm Monday to Friday, then switch off completely and between 5.10 friday and 7am Monday I don't see or speak to anybody from work, or anyone regarding my work. Weekend contrast keeps me sane, I hate bankers so I'd be mad otherwise.
Weekends are spent doing trivial/fun things, nothing I hate more than to have to spend time constructively during the weekend.
So pubs, driving, kiddie activities (zoo's, scrabble, whatever)..yeah thats it, get in touch with your inner child!

I honestly find a nice joint after work takes away all stress both from the mind and body........ok it's probably more like plastering over the cracks than mind maintenance, but has worked to date.

I find a martial art ideal for calming the mind..
It is amazing how quickly you forget about work and can focus the mind on a single item when that item happens to be Japanese and trying to smack your head in
Even the non-fighting bits of the lesson help.. there is no room for thinking about work and other stressful things when you can only think about the pain in your legs stood in a stance for 5minutes whilst the instructor explains what someone else is doing wrong and your muscles are starting to quiver and spasm..

You forget anything exists.
My mental state has deteriorated(sp?) since stopping training, but hey who cares. The ability and 75% of the mental ability is still there.

lol Bren, I hope the slippery slope is shaped like a ski jump, that way the more speed i gain on the way down (no pun intended ), the easier it will be to swoosh straight back to the top

Try a dojo full of 150 Japanese students in the middle of tokyo, in august, each one counting to 10, whilst you punch in stance, and then change to the other leg/arm.
You forget anything exists.
You forget anything exists.
The ability to shut out everything in the world other than that exact moment and situation is very powerful.. in a mind training destressing way.

Well I am glad this has picked up a bigger response today.
I am not short of a time to get a 'release' since I started mountain biking again, mostly at night, which is great.

Most evenings when I get home I am drafted into the Jedi army by my 7 year old and spend 30 mins to an hour assisting him on Jedi Power Battles on the dreamcast...it's a good way to wind down after a London commute.

Simon,
I don't think it's always a case of getting stuff out your system. Pressures like family, job, money and other commitments don't dissapear with a quick spin on a bike, or a few rounds of sparing. I always feel good after a bike ride, and it's good to be somwhere that isn't work, or kiddie wrangling or trying to fix the car so I can drive to work.
I don't know, maybe someone should combine therapy sessions with boxing. Sparing with your shrink, it could catch on!

Paul,
I hear what you are saying.. in that the problem will still be there when you get back.. but hopefully a cleared head will then see the problems better and be able to make a more sensible solution if there is one or see the things causing stress in a new light.
The amount of things that I get stressed about and then have a good nights sleep, or go training, and wonder why I was stressed about it.
But then perhaps they are not real STRESS.. just a problem?
I think also it is the way you can look at things that helps or hinders..
Say for example the fuel pump breaks on the car.. you could be all annoyed and thinking bloody car, always breaking when I don't need it etc..
or
So I need a new fuel pump, undo those 8little nuts and pull the cage out, new one in and away we go..
Focusing on the solution rather than the problem.
But then again that is perhaps not real STRESS..
I am very relaxed and watch others get so stressed over something so small and cannot understand it.. which is exactly why Stress is such a problem as it is not easy to understand and effects people so differently and likewise the solution is different for everyone, although specific solutions usual destress most people.
I hope you manage to sort something..
Perhaps it is time for a holiday?
