Just been reviewing how much we pay for house, contents insurance. One call to our ins comp and were now paying £180 yr less than we were.
How much do you rate the value of the contents of your house.
Ive got a 4 bed detached with the usual things like widescreen tv, DVD, fitted kitchen, leather suite, etc. Currently got contents at £40000. Does this sound about right.
Chip.

Nope under insured I'd say - just consider that contents also covers redecorating costs too, like wallpapering, carpets, curtains etc. Add on dvd player (recordable dvd player), tv, pc, cds, dvd movies, xbox/ps2 + games, clothes, furniture.
Id say a 1/2 bedroom flat should be insured for at least £20k contents - you're detached so therefore more rooms.
Must be something on-line which can estimate what you should be insuring for, if not write stuff down and see how quickly it all adds up.
I've got my three bedroom terrace contents at £30k, 3 bed semi at £35k and will be insuring 2 x 1 bedroom flats (buy to lets) at £20k each - and I will be asking the tenants to insure contents too (incase they dont then I'm still covered for my stuff!)

Chip,
Just imagine ur house burned down and u lost everything, and i mean everything.
When i renewed my insurance cos i a few changes this is what i was told,
go round each room and add up everything in there,
living rm, settee, carpets/wooden flooring, tele, vid, dvd, cd/dvd collection, curtains, drawers, cupboards.
Kitchen.. cooker, washer, drywer, pots pans cutlery, table, fridge
all ur clothes.
so on and so on and you will be amazed how much cover you actually need

CD's and DVD depending on how many, will rack up the contents.
I didn't think about them till I counted them!
Also, you want to check the max claim for a single item. Me telly and laptop were both 1500 a piece, which bumped my premium up a bit.
