purchased a HU from an on-line retailer (Kenwood Z838), paid switch for it.
Courier arrived today,
Opened box and totally different unit inside (cassette)
obviously they might say no probs send replacement out and pick up wrong one at same time, but what if they take the mickey and say old one back to we check etc
where do i stand
thanks

They are at fault for supplying wrong goods.
I would photograph what you have, maybe alongside the delivery note, and thus if you send it back you have proof of what they sent and that it was wrong.
Think this is standard statutory rights ground, eg; goods recieved did not match what was ordered, thus they should not kick up a fuss.
I had a problem with a modem a while back, was not what I ordered, sent it back, got new, this time correct, one delivered.
If they mess you around, talk to Trading Standards.

don't think they will mess me about , but i really don't want any problems if they do say send back original and we will send a replacement and refund you postage
my feeling is why should i , you got it wrong and its your issue to resolve for both parties

my point is, from the original post it sounds like you haven't contacted them.
Surely this can be only thing you do first, then post for advice if you don't like what they say
They should pay for postage, should say on the T&C's
