hi all

my mate has a sony a/v amp that does not have a coax or digital/optical socket in the back!!
what it does have is a set of six phono's marked for each element of 5.1( centre, sub etc!)
his dvd has a scart output but i cannot find anywhere a scart to phono 5.1 connecter!!

if he connects using just a normal 2 phono to 2 phono with a third ( usually yellow ) phono to the tv for picture will he get 5.1 output????

any help would be appreciated.

thanks
pete

Cookie is right, you don't have a 5.1 decoder. This is a device, normally built into the A/V amplifier, which decodes the surround soundtrack and recreates the six audio channels.

These decoders aren't usually available separately (and if they do, I'd guess they'll be high-end hi-fi kit and therefore expensive). You need a new DVD player with a six channel output (and six phono leads), or an A/V amplifier which has a digital input.

If you use a Scart lead, you can still get stereo - but if you've got the speakers, treat yourself to a new DVD player.

There was a bit of a fashion in the "early days" of Dolby digital etc to have offboard 5.1 decoders - Yamaha defo made one a few years ago that was <£200 new. If he can find one of them second hand, it may only cost £50, and will do a better job than the onboard decoders on most DVD players.

Does it have S-Video connections? If it has, you can go from SCART to S-Video and you will get the full 5.1 (but no picture through S-Video - use yellow lead for this).

also as has been said you could by a seperate processor, but i did a quick search and couldn't find any cheap ones, you'll mainly be looking at meridion, cyrus, tag etc. These work in same way a pre amp to mono block type hifi separates do in that one unit sorts signal out from sources (dvd, cd, laser disc, etc) then sends off to separate amps or in your mates case 1 with 5 by X watts amp, which in theory leads to less noise pollution from transformer etc.

Or get a DVD player with on-board decoder. You should be able to pick up a secondhand Pioneer DV-636D pretty cheaply these days. This has an on-board 5.1 decoder, so you just link up the 6 phono wires, and you're away!
