Three guys go to stay in a hotel. The rooms are £30 each for 3 people sharing(cheap I know). So Each hands over their £10 (£30 in total) for the room. the manager of the hotel realises that there is a special rate for a room of 3 people which is £25 . So the manager gives £5 to the bell boy and asks him to share it between the three men.. thinking about this the bell boy knows he cant split £5 three ways , so pockets £2 and gives the men £1 each.
So if they all paid £9 (£10 minus the £1 they got back) which equals £27 and the bell boy has his £2.. a total of £29..
Another way to think of it (in case anyone is getting a headache!)
All the blokes pay £9, ie £27 total. The manager says he only needs £25, so there's two pounds change. Thee three blokes give it to the doorman as a tip.
So at no point does £29 ever come into it. The phrasing of the question misleads you.
