So howcome if print it out and cut off all the pieces from the top one it fits exactly onto the bottom 1?

Ok, try this then:
3 people have lunch and get the bill. Its £25 so they all throw in a tenner - ie they pay £30. The waiter brings them 5 pound coins in change. Unable to split the 5 coins between the 3 of them, they each take one pound coin back and leave 2 on the table as the tip.
So... Each person pays a tenner and takes a pound back so pays £9 each. Thats £9 times 3 people = £27. Add the £2 left on the table = £29. What happened to the missing £1???

There is no missing pound. The £27 they pay includes the £2 tip.
3 x £9 = £27 = £25 + £2
